Here's the life story of a woman jockey who "thrived in the gritty world of no-holds-barred 'bush track' racing, ultimately competing in an estimated 10,000 races over almost five decades." She rode mostly at Midwestern fairs and other small tracks from 1924 to 1971. As a teenager the author watched her ride, and he never forgot her "fiery intensity and daring." A fairly early American imprint on foxhunting on horseback, following the original periodical and book publication in London. "Farandnear" is probably the Banks estate in Shirley, Mass., now a property of the Trustees of Reservations. A beautiful and scarce set, good for a gift for your favorite MFH.

Philadelphia: Budd Company, 1950. Privately printed. Stapled soft cover. Good (cover soil, small label on front). 12p, 3 ills. A memorial tribute published by Ledwinka's longtime employer. Ledwinka was the pioneering automotive engineer who developed "the first four-wheel brakes, the first individual wheel drive, the first car with gas-electric power...That he was the real father of the modern, streamlined all-steel automobile body is unquestioned." The U.S. Patent Office honored him with Patent No. 2,000,000 in 1935. Laid in: copy of a 3-page typed letter from Ledwinka to an officer of the automobile body firm Ambi-Budd Presswerk in Berlin, February 19, 1941. With wit and technical expertise Ledwinka skewers the idea of plastic automobiles (made from soya beans?). For three of them the horse and owner are given; for the international military jumping competition the horse, country, and rider are given. Also includes the music program. "Details and further Show information will be frequently announced in the Jumping Enclosure by the 'Marconiphone Public Address System.'" A scarce survival.
