Description:
1903. Arguably the finest of the French satirical magazines and directly comparable with Germany's 'Simplicissimus'. Many of the finest graphic artists and caricaturists of the period are represented - Iribe, Caran d'Ache, Villon, Steinlen, Rabier, Camara, Kupka, Robida, Van Dongen, Willette, Poulbot, et cetera. From its first number [4 april 1901] 'L'Assiette au Beurre' "was recognised at home and abroad as something unusual - at once the hardest-hitting and the most visually compelling [magazine] of its type. ...The magazine, which continued until the fall of 1912, never ceased to strike out against the alleged crimes of the establishment, of the privileged few who had possession of the 'assiette au beurre'." [Stanley Appelbaum in the preface to the Dover Publication's anthology of 1978.] The satire is not only France-centred - England, Germany, Russia and others are frequently in its sights. Bound in contemporary quarter cloth and marbled boards, edges untrimmed. Very good copies.

Description:
Paris: G. Steinheil (Éditeur), 1892. First Edition. Author, Adrien Loir, was assistant to the world reknowned French scientist, Louis Pasteur. Loir travelled to Australia in 1888 on a ship called the 'Cuzco'. "The Pasteur Institute undertook significant work in Australia during the late 1800s. Pasteur and his colleagues attempted to curb the growing rabbit population (unsuccessfully). However, they were successful in developing several other vaccines, including one for the dreaded disease Anthrax... In his thesis titled 'La Microbiologie en Australie', Loir points out that there was strong opposition to the destruction of rabbits from the graziers, who had identified damage caused by rabbits as a justification for claims to reduce the Government rent on the land. Loir also explains that the political climate in Australia was such that the reluctance to see the Pasteur Mission succeed was virtually unanimous. Finally, the make-up of the Rabbit Commission itself was, in Loir's opinion, enough to…

Paris: Henri Laurens, 1910. First Edition. Folio, full-page plates including four woodblocks in colour; marbled endpapers, contemporary cloth foxed, in lovely unmarked condition throughout. 'C'est sans doute par un effet de la mentalité particulière des Extrême-Orientaux que ~ le monde leur est apparu, non point comme un élément incomplet, soumis à leur orgueil par un créateur absolu, mais comme un ensemble frémissant dont la vie s'écoulait, avec ses subtilités, ses beautés et ses douleurs, dans une activité géante ~ mais nulle part cette idée n'a reçu d'expression plus magnifique, plus puissante, plus claire aussi et mieux ordonnée, que dans le bouddhisme.' 'It is doubtless due to the particular mentality of the Far Easterners that the world appeared to them, not as an incomplete element, subjected to their pride by an absolute creator, but as a quivering whole whose life 'flowed, with its subtleties, its beauties and its pains, in a gigantic activity~ but nowhere has this idea…

'The Modern Girl and the merest male were sauntering down the sunny side of the street upon a particular day in 1925, talking of hardly anything other than very little at all. Just by way of passing a comment, and perchance because nothing else occurred to her at the moment, she spoke thus : "Girls have never been so attractive as they are to-day ; except perhaps in their original state in a garden called Eden," which was, all things to be considered, a most un-catty sentiment to be declared. "You refer, I dare to presume, to (a) the shingle, (b) the short skirt, and (c) the total absence of hips?" Being just the response one might expect from her companion,…
