[Washington, D.C.], 1876. First edition. Very good. 8vo. 21, blank, [1]pp. Disbound. In 1874, George Cannon defeated Robert Baskin for a seat in Congress from Utah. Baskin, a member of the anti-Mormon Liberal party, challenged the outcome with the U. S. Congress, claiming that Cannon was not a US citizen and that he was also a Mormon and a practicing polygamist. Cannon presented a spirited defense. Congress subsequnetly ordered that the papers surrounding the case be published in 1876. A scarce anti-Mormon document in very nice condition. 44th Congress, 1st Session. House of Representatives. Mis. Doc. No. 166. Paper slighly browned. Still, a very good copy.

Handwritten, three-page MSS from the County Commissioners of Strafford County to the towns of Stafford, New Durham, Alton and Barnstead, regarding a proposed highway in nearby Farmington. The Commissioners see these towns as receiving benefits from such a highway and propose a hearing to see if they will agree to shoulder some of the costs. (8" x 9 3/4"). A good example of how local internal improvements were implemented in mid-19th century New England. Two horizontal creases, otherwise a clean copy.

Original blue cloth binding decorated in gilt. vii, [1], 677 pp. Front free end paper has an inscription by the author to a friend, dated July 6th, 1882. Wear to the extremities and spine somewhat darkened. Else clean, tight. William White, writing under the pseudonym of William Grey, wrote this account of California and Oregon pioneers as a reaction to journalist accounts that he found to be a "misrepresentation." An immigrant himself to California in 1849, his accounts include gold rush memoirs and descriptions of major West Coast cities. Howes W372.

Folded 8 x 10 inch letter from Philip Evan Thomas, dated 1850, pinned to the front free endpaper. First volume: 189, [3] pp including errata page. Second volume: 119 pp. This is a detailed account of the Quaker effort from 1828 to 1850 to provide assistance to the Seneca indians. This copy was also a presentation copy from a Joint Committee member, Philip Thomas, who was also the first president of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and a major figure in the early canal enterprises of New England. This is an argument challenging the views of many southern commentators that northern manufacturers derived unfair profits from the tariff on cotton. The Lowell textile mills, in particular, were a target of criticism, due to the high profile of their shareholders who were men of great wealth. Cary argued that the dividend streams of the textile mills in aggregate often compare unfavorably with other industries and pointed to the failure rate of many mills in New England.
