The author has signed the title page under her name. Above the title is printed in the same ink as the signature "To Beth, here's a story to help you remember Michigan!" Below the author's signature, there's an inscription (in the same ink), signed name and a doodle of a pumpkin as follows: "(It's got punkins in it. Love, Alicia oops sign autographs much?)" The Alicia was corrected. My guess is that this inscription belongs to ALicia Conroy who appears to have been around Ms. Campbell at this time, however, there's no proof. Now who is the enigmatic Beth who gave up such neat sentiments?

Lugduni Batavorum: Joannis Maire, 1656. Vellum. Very Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. This book is clean, tight, basically square and internally unmarked, but there is a small name on the title page and a book mark verso (alexander Grantt). It is lightly rubbed and the white vellum is slightly discolored. It has 473, bright, clear pages plus index It is missing the frontispiece.

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1900. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. This book is clean, tight and square with sharp corners. There is a name and date (1903) on the ffep; otherwise it is unmarked. What makes this edition unique is that its owner, Grace Hyde, had written to Howells in 1899 and has tipped in his reply on the rear end papers. His reply: "Kittery Point, Sept. 12, 1899 My Dear Miss Hyde: I have just come from your letter of the 14th June, and am very much afraid that it was never answered. Will you let me now thank you for your kind wish to have me lecture before your Club? I have engaged to make a lecturing tour this Winter, which will occupy me until January. These books have a slight roll, are bumped/rubbed and the spine covers are beginning to split at the edges. They are tight. They have 410, 396, clear lightly foxed pages (plus ads in Vol. 1) bound in dark brown, blind stamped boards with gold titles on the spine.

This book is tight, square and internally unmarked, but there are some pencil marks on the green end papers that are very difficult to see against the green. It is age darkened and lightly rubbed. It has 56, clear, lightly toned pages illustrated with very nice, color drawings bound in tan cloth (could it one have been lighter?) with black titles on the spine and gold titles on the front where there is also a Greenaway color drawing.

It is rubbed at the edges and more so at the spine which is chipped at the top. It has gray end papers and 220, bright, clear, pages bound in flexible boards covered in green leather (faded to brown in places) with gold titles and a gold flower on the spine and facsimile signature on the front.
