Martineau, known widely for her views on abolition and observations on societal issues, is often considered the first female sociologist. Arbroath, Scotland: P. Cochran, 1822. The agricultural distress that arose in the wake of the Napoleonic Wars and the introduction of machinary was at its height in 1822, the year in which Parliament conducted major hearings. Crime was rife during this period throughout Great Britain. Arbroath, in Angus County, is located on the North Sea Coast midway between Edinburgh and Aberdeen. No other copies located.

London: Frederick Muller Limited, 1958. 255 pp. Peter Whitehead never knew his father and was orphaned by the only person who could tell him, his mother, when he was 13 years old. He would be detained in mental institutions for the next 12 years of his life which was often common practice for children without parents at this time in England. This book recounts his experiences within the systems that were keeping him from the outside world and how he was finally released following a High Court application in 1956. Slight cracking and discoloration to dust jacket.

Chicago: United Workers'Party, 1935. 7 issues for January -May, August and October 1935. Good condition with minor discoloration and wear to the wraps.

London: James Burns, 1871. vii [1[, 120 pp. Good with minor chips to the wraps and a small inventory number written in on the corner of the title page. The number indicates it was once used at Canterbury. Elder Frederick Evans was born in England and joined the Shakers at New Lebanon as a young man. He was a social reformer and worked to keep Shaker beliefs relevant in a changing world. He traveled to back to England on missionary trips.

New Haven: Yale University Press, 1937. 133 pp. 500 copies printed. This is a first edition of arguably the book that introduced many Americans to Shaker design. The work is illustrated with photographs by William Winter. The first edition in dust jacket is difficult to find. Light wear to the jacket. Ex-Wertkin collection.

Boston: Shaker Agency, 1881. 4 pp. Fine and unfolded. This piece includes an analysis of the spring water sent to Brother Elijah Myrick dated Nov. 15, 1880 and this piece was probably published in early 1881 in anticipation of the opening of The Rural Home located at the former North Family of the Harvard Shaker Community. The recently constructed North Family dwelling was converted to a health resort featuring Shaker Medical Water.

Columbus: F.J. Heer, 1907. 415 pp. Very good with names in pencil on the rear fly leaf. Surprising scarce with no copies currently for sale online. Inscribed to Elbert Hubbard in 1908 on the front flyleaf. This work gathers the various articles written by MacLean on the Shakers in one volume. MacLean salvaged a startling amount of Shaker material and even issued rare book catalogs to promote institutional collecting of Shaker material.

Cleveland: The Penton Press, 1913. Bound in blue pebbled morocco. Unpaginated. Illustrated with a frontis portrait. Bound in blue morocco and decorated, lined and lettered in gilt with inset of a red and green tulip in the center of the front board. Includes silk endpapers. OCLC locates 8 copies. Very good with insignificant rubbing to the binding. Limited to 100 copies and inscribed by the author's father. Ford's father Joseph Butler was an Ohio industrialist and founder of the Butler Institute for American art. Ford wrote poems about friends, family and here Ohio home. Illustrated with prints of ink drawings with one image almost certainly of the North Union Ohio Shaker stone mill in what is now Shaker Heights.

Windsor: Nahum Mower, 1805. Complete issue for July 30, 1805. 8 pages. Foxed, folds, removed from a bound volume. One ad clipped out of the last page. Almost two complete pages printing the Constitution of the new country of Haiti.

New York: Exposition Press, 1950. 144 pp. A first hand account of the brutality and incompetence in mental hospitals faced by patients and attendants alike. Jesse Walter Dees, Jr., was the head of the Sociology department at University of Tampa, Florida and spent much of his time writing about the down-trodden of society. Cracking and wear to the dust jacket.

Has a plain front wrap but lacking rare wrap. Text soiled and foxed. Fagging involved upper classmen harassing underclassmen in British Schools. In this case Malet's brother was beaten and expelled for not following the rules of fagging.
