George Francis FitzGerald (1851-1901) proposed testing Maxwell's theory by producing electromagnetic waves with an oscillating circuit that would alternately charge and discharge a capacitor. Fitzgerald had calculated that the power of the electromagnetic waves generated in this way would increase with the fourth power of frequency, and this led him to propose a frequency of several million cycles per second and a design of a transmitting antenna.  This was the method used by Heinrich Hertz to create and measure electromagnetic waves for the first time.  Fitzgerald's first two papers were published as "On the Energy lost by the Radiation from Alternating Electric Currents" and "On a Method of Producing Electromagnetic Disturbances of Comparatively Short Wave-lengths.". lxxx, 700, 103, 32 pp. 8vo. Ex-library stamp on title page, the only indication of its former life in an institution. Very clean within.

Also contains Michael Faraday's "Experimental Researches--Thirtieth Series" (pp. 159-180); G. B. Airy's "Account of Pendulum Experiments Undertaken in the Harton Colliery, for the Purpose of Determining the Mean Density of the Earth" (Volume 146 pp. 297-355, 1856); and William Andrews' "On the Constitution and Properties of Ozone" (pp. 1-13). iv, [3], v, [1]-951 pp. 4to. Also included his description of least-squares. 290, [3] pp. 4to. Recent, half-leather binding with brown leather spine, five raised bands, gold embossed titling, brown marbled paper boards. Interior clean and tight. Ex-library with two ink stamps on title page. Text in Latin.

Brown cloth covered boards with blind embossed boards, gold embossing to spine. Light wear and scuffing, minor soiling from age, now in paper covered slipcase. Endpapers appear to have been replaced at some point, a masterful job, light foxing within.

Previous owner's name in pencil on first free endpaper, and a note, "Summer reading for 1923." Minor staining to preliminary pages due to quality of paper. Illustrated with dozens of Kolb Brothers photographs that document the Canyon and their trips.

Clean and crisp within. Beautifully produced with a red titling to title page as well as a green and yellow rose, red capital letter at the start of each short chapter.

Both volumes were rebacked at a much earlier time in their lives, wear and scuffing typical for the age, small losses at board corners.. Eleven (11) trifold plates that key to text tipped in at rear of Volume I, five (5) in Volume II, all in Very Good condition.

Inscribed "To Jim" by Frank Lloyd Wright in his distinct hand below the illustration of Wright's "Office Building Project of Glass and Metal" facing the title page. Inscribed to the previous owner on the front cover verso, "To Jim from Jack/ Christmas 1944." Could be John "Jack" Howe, longtime member of the Taliesin Fellowship and oftentimes cited as Wright's most trusted draftsman. On the second free endpaper, James "Jim" Monroe Waldeck's quite distinct signature; Waldeck was an apprentice in the 1940s, although we are unsure of the exact dates. 63 pp. 4to. Orange paper covered boards with wear, chipping, and losses. The title page has corners that were removed, evidence of early tape repairs, amateur tape repairs and paper replacement to first two leaves. A square and rectangle excised from title page.
