Mrs George Chapple (1808-77). The daughter of colonial civil servant Thomas Sheridan and minor novelist Caroline Callander, Norton showed early signs of a literary talent which an abusive marriage and her husband's slow-wit later encouraged her into. The title poem is based on the tale of the Wandering Jew; other pieces in this collection include 'The Captive Pirate' and 'The Arab's farewell to his horse'. Apparently the first printed work of a local man (whom other printed evidence suggests was a miller, a subscriber to local topographical works and an amateur copyist), it includes verse on, amongst others, alcohol: 'Gooch's strong beer' and 'drinking', and the 'Ruins of Pevensey Castle'.
