London: Printed for the Translator; and sold by F. Newbery, 1772. In two volumes. viii, 256; [2], 256, 253-307pp, [1]. Contemporary richly gilt-tooled calf, contrasting red and green morocco lettering-pieces. A trifle rubbed. Contemporary inked ownership inscriptions to head to both titles. A handsome copy, in contemporary speckled calf, of the first of several English editions/translations of Swiss physiologist, bibliographer and author Albrecht von Haller's (1708-1777) utopian novel, set in a fictional Persia under the rule of Uzun Hasan (1423-78) in which the prevailing political organisation is based on eastern theory. First published in German in 1771, this English edition was met with mixed reaction; the Critical Review devoted more than three pages to a synopsis and conclusion that was praiseworthy of both the work and its translation, suggesting that the author has 'happily imitated the animated spirit of Fenelon', whilst William Woodfall in the Monthly Review complained that the… Read More

Mrs George Chapple (1808-77). The daughter of colonial civil servant Thomas Sheridan and minor novelist Caroline Callander, Norton showed early signs of a literary talent which an abusive marriage and her husband's slow-wit later encouraged her into. The title poem is based on the tale of the Wandering Jew; other pieces in this collection include 'The Captive Pirate' and 'The Arab's farewell to his horse'. As with her first collection, the work met with commercial success and a second edition followed in the same year. Jackson p. 557. Jackson, Romantic poetry by Women p.244.. First edition. 8vo.

Hailsham: Printed by G. Breads. And sold by him for the author, 1828. [2], viii, [2], [9]-40pp. Uncut in original publisher's printed boards. Worn, lacks backstrip, marking to boards. A remarkable survival, in the original boards, of a Sussex printed rarity. Apparently the first printed work of a local man (whom other printed evidence suggests was a miller, a subscriber to local topographical works and an amateur copyist), it includes verse on, amongst others, alcohol: 'Gooch's strong beer' and 'drinking', and the 'Ruins of Pevensey Castle'.
