New York: Harper & Brothers, 1908. First American Edition 1st Printing. Cloth. Near Fine/Slipcased. Dudley Carpenter. First Printing--Illustrated by Dudley Carpenter. Signed by Hough directly on the front free endpaper--signature only. From the recently auctioned collection of M.B. Goldstone-- who, along with his brother Adrian Homer Goldstone--were Steinbeck's bibliographers. A superb copy housed in clamshell and slipcased--matching the reddish brown cloth boards--lettered in gilt and with the date "1908" in gilt at the bottom of the slipcase box. The true first printing and therefore scarce and collectible. Frontispiece with tissue guard, along with three more illustrations by Carpenter. Bright and clean decorated front board--some age toning to the rear board and dustiness to the page edges--still in remarkably fine condition. M.B. Goldstone and his brother Adrian Homer Goldstone, who was Steinbeck's bibliographer, collected hundreds of early 20th Century western fiction and detective fiction.

A very handsome first print copy in fine condition--without the very rare dustjacket. Blue cloth with gilt decorations and lettering to the front board and spine. Tight and square copy--very clean interior and exterior boards. Some dustiness to the page ends--but minor. Previous owner's name in ink to the front pastedown with some light age toning to the front and rear pastedowns---this copy came from the recently auctioned collection of M.B. Goldstone and has his penciled signature to the front free endpaper along with "First Edition" notations. Goldstone and his brother were well known collectors and Steinbeck bibliographers. This is a very collectible copy in fine condition.
