About This Item
Westview Pr, 1991. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. First edition/printing. Hardcover. xiv+ 409 pp. with index, illustrated. Fine (bit of foxing to the edges of the text block. In near fine dust jacket with tiny flaws to the extremities. A unique, irrevernt account of the modern battleship and its place in American naval history, from the 1898 sinking of the coal-fired Maine to the deployment of the cruise missle-armed Missouri in the Persian Guilf in 1991. The author concludes that the battleship was never in fact an effective weapon of war even though the would initially was mesmerized by the revolutionary design of the "Dreadnought" in 1903. The ships' actions in WWI were inconclusive and in WWII, the U.S. Navy relied more on the aircraft carrier.
