About This Item

London England: Bloomsbury Publishing PLC. Near Fine/Near Fine. 2009. First Edition First Printing. Cloth. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall Octavo 0747583854 Hardcover First Edition First Printing Family Britain, 1951-1957 (Tales of a New Jerusalem) As in Austerity Britain, an astonishing array of vivid, intimate and unselfconscious voices drive the narrative. The keen-eyed Nella Last shops assiduously at Barrow Market as austerity and rationing gradually give way to relative abundance; housewife Judy Haines, relishing the detail of suburban life, brings up her children in Chingford; the self-absorbed civil servant Henry St John perfects the art of grumbling. These and many other voices give a rich, unsentimental picture of everyday life in the 1950s. We also encounter well-known figures on the way, such as Doris Lessing (joining and later leaving the Communist Party), John Arlott (sticking up on Any Questions? for the rights of homosexuals) and Tiger's Roy of the Rovers (making his goal-scoring debut for Melchester). All this is part of a colourful, unfolding tapestry, in which the great national events - the Tories returning to power, the death of George VI, the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth, the Suez Crisis - jostle alongside everything that gave Britain in the 1950s its distinctive flavour: .

Reviews

On Nov 28 2014, a reader said:
The second volume of David Kynaston's "Tales of a New Jerusalem" series presents a portrait of a nation in transition. Though still an imperial and industrial power with a tradition-bound patriarchal society, the changes that would create the Britain of the 21st century were already underway. Kynaston captures it all in a panoramic view, chronicling the gradual emergence of a consumer society after a decade of wartime-induced austerity, the challenges posed by an increasingly racially diverse society, and the growing concerns over the rebelliousness of youth. All of this is told with a degree of depth and perceptiveness that nonetheless avoids getting bogged down into a morass of details. It is an impressive book, one that rewards readers with fascinating insights gleaned from seemingly trivial details, all of which are recounted in an enjoyable style that will leave the reader eager for the next volume in the series.
