About This Item

Oxford University Press. Very Good/Very Good. 1991. Hard Cover. 8vo 0193113066 Dust jacket complete, unclipped. Original cloth boards with bright gilt titling on spine. No ownership marks. Numerous photographs and illustrations. xliii, 1189 pages clean and tight. Reprinted Tenth edition edited by JOHN O W E N WARD. This most famous of all one-volume musical dictionaries first appeared in 1938. This copy is a reprint of the tenth edition. The basic character of the book is unchanged. The combination of comprehensiveness and clarity, the friendly and unpompous helpfulness, which made it a true companion to music-lovers-these remain. But the world of music has changed since the last major revision. New names have emerged, new techniques are practised, old composers have been rediscovered, established figures have been re-assessed. John Owen Ward, who was Scholes's assistant in his lifetime, has seen to it that all these changes are noted and recorded in the Companion. Existing entries have all been checked and reconsidered, and there are new entries wherever these are called for. Thus brought up to date, the Oxford Companion to Music will continue in the nineteen-seventies to be the one indispensable possession for every musician and lover of music. .
