The text is illustrated with pre-, of eight pages each, of black-and-white reproductions of historical paintings and sketches. Colour illustrated paperback binding with burgundy and pale blue coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. Napoleon's invasion of Russia and the terrible retreat from Moscow were a military epic and the human tragedy on a colossal scale  history's first example of total war. 1812 is a masterful account of this turning point in European history, both a poignant tale of the individual footsoldier and a sweeping history of a turbulent time.  Rear panel blurb.
