Exclusive interviews with living recipients and first-person reports from years past testify to the wifely differing personalities of these American heores, to their thoughts and beliefs, and how the medal affected their lives, for good, or for ill. Not only relates the individual stories but examines the history of America at war, from the Civil War, through the wars of expansion westward into Indian territory, in the Caribbean basin and in the Pacific, thrugh two World Wars, Korea, and Vietnam. For a time the Medal Honor was also awarded in peacetime to a few outstanding men such as Charles Lindbergh and Admiral Richard Byrd. In the final section there is a complete register of honor, in which each and every one of the 3,394 Meda of Honor reciipinets is named, along with the date, branch of service and arena of action. Illustrated with color and black and white photographs and ten battlefield and war maps. Essays: The Soldier's Prize, Changing Standards, Medal of Honor Designs and The Psychology of Heroism. This book was a collaboration between the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, Boston Publishing Company and Time-Life Books. The dust jacket has Time-Life logo on the back with ISBN 0-8094-5628-1 and Boston Publishing Company on the spine. This dust jacket is color photgraphically illustrated with the 3 military branches' versions of the Congressional Medal of Honor.
