About This Item
Shire Publications Ltd. Very Good. 1990. Soft Cover. 8vo 0747800642 72 pages clean and tight. Causewayed enclosures are the earliest enclosure sites of British prehistory. They were built over a period of six to eight centuries during the early half of the third millennium bc. Their function seems to reflect the preoccupation of the earliest farming communities in Britain with the definition of space for a range of activities varying from defence through ritual and ceremonial activity to village dwelling. Occupation ranged from seasonal to permanent and construction from simple to highly complex. Today about sixty enclosures are known in Britain but many more must exist and are being discovered, principally by aerial photography, every year. About ten sites, almost all of them on the chalk uplands of southern Britain, have survived the vagaries of time and may be visited. They are not impressive earthworks, five thousand years of the activity of man and nature having led to colossal erosion. This book considers the ways of life and material culture of these communities and analyses present knowledge about these fascinating monuments. .
