About This Item

London England: Collins, 1989. Hardback. First Edition. From Shore to Shore. In 1953 Mountbatten, then Allied Commander-in-Chief in the Mediterranean, paid a visit to the Emperor of Ethiopia. Fascinated by the extraordinary mixture of drama and of farce, the exaggerated deference of the courtiers, the imperial gold dinner service recently supplied by Asprey's, Haile Selassie's curious habit of addressing his English visitors in French and his French in English, he wrote a diary of the tour for the entertainment of himself and of his family. He did the same in 1956 when, now First Sea Lord, he toured India, Burma, New Zealand and Australia. From then on he made a point of keeping a diary whenever he travelled abroad or did anything of special interest. The result is a unique compendium of people, places and events. Wherever he went, whatever he did, his journal is suffused by his enthusiasm and instaiable curiosity; no one had better chances to see the world in all its diversity than Lord Mountbatten, no one could have had more fun out of doing so or have communicated it more effectively to his readers. Illustrated. 402 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.). First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall Octavo. Hardback.
