About This Item

George Martin Stephen (born 1949) was High Master of St. Paul's School in London until 2011. Stephen is an author of titles on modern naval history and war poetry. Eric Grove (born 1948) is a British naval historian and defence analyst. He took an MA in War Studies at King's College London in 1971 and was appointed as a civilian lecturer at the Britannia Royal Naval College Dartmouth. During the 1970s he published widely. In 1980 and 1981 Grove was the first Dartmouth academic to exchange for a year with the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis. Leaving Dartmouth as Deputy Head of Strategic Studies and International Affairs at the end of 1984 Grove worked briefly for the Council for Arms Control before becoming a freelance academic and defence consultant. His work on Maritime Power and European Security involved the creation of a back channel, later official, dialogue between the Soviet, US and Royal Navies. Ten major naval engagements are thoroughly analyzed in this authoritative book by respected British naval historians. This includes: The Battle of the River Plate; The Battle of Taranto, The Battle of Matapan, The Sinking of the HMS Hood, The Sinking of the Bismarck, The Sinking of HMS Prince of Wales, The Sinking of the Repulse, The sinking of the Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, The Battle of the Coral Sea, The Battle of Midway, The Battle of the Barents Sea.,
