A scarce copy of 'The Portfolio', compiled and edited by Philip Gilbert Hamerton, who wrote extensively on the subject of printmaking throughout the nineteenth century. A fascinating nineteenth century monthly periodical featuring art and printmaking. This copy covers 1889, and is in its original cloth binding. Edited by Philip Gilbert Hamerton, a British artist who found success as an art critic after the publication of his book Painter's Camp in the Highlands in 1863. Establishing himself as a critic of note, he would later go on to found the monthly art periodical The Portfolio in 1870, which ran for total of 23 years. With a particular interest in the art of printmaking and etching, much of The Portfolio is dedicated to important etchers and printmakers of the period. Containing thirty-six plates from wood and steel engravings. Collated and complete. Also including numerous in-text illustrations. In the publisher's original cloth binding with gilt lettering and design to the front board and spine. Externally, smart and bright. Some rubbing to the joints and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Cloth to spine is slightly faded. Internally, firmly bound. Pages contain the odd instance of spotting, particularly to the tissue guards and plates, but otherwise pages are generally bright and clean. Very Good Indeed
