ABOUT THIS SET:
The Venture of Islam has been honored as a magisterial work of the mind since its publication in early 1975. In this three-volume study, illustrated with charts and maps, Hodgson traces and interprets the historical development of Islamic civilization from before the birth of Muhammad to the middle of the twentieth century. This work grew out of the famous course on Islamic civilization that Hodgson created and taught for many years at the University of Chicago.
Volume 1 analyzes the world before Islam, Muhammad's challenge (570-624), and the early Muslim state of 625 to 692. Hodgson then reviews the classical civilization of the High Caliphate, discussing such topics as the bloom of Arabic literary culture, Muslim personal piety, and the dissolution of the Absolutist tradition. This volume also contains a general introduction explaining the author's method and terminology; a prologue on the Islamic vision in religion and civilization; and a Foreword by Reuben Smith, who, as Hodgson's colleague and friend, finished the work after the author's death and saw it through the press.
Volume 2 investigates the establishment of an international Islamic civilization through about 1500. Volume 3 describes the second flowering of Islam: the Safavi, Timuri, and Ottoman empires. The final part of the work analyzes the widespread Islamic heritage in today's world. Each volume contains charts and maps, a glossary of terms and names, and an index.(Publisher).

About Underground Books, ABAA
Underground Books is an online rare and antiquarian bookshop as well as a brick and mortar general bookstore of the same name in downtown Carrollton, Georgia. Sister store Hills & Hamlets Bookshop is located in the nearby planned eco-community of Serenbe.
Co-owners Josh Niesse and Megan Bell met in 2011, just 10 days or so after Josh opened the doors of Underground Books, literally underground, several steps below street level in a 100-year-old basement in our historic downtown. Megan, an English student at the University of West Georgia, walked in, fell down the rabbit hole, and never left! Reader, we married in May of 2014, under the book arch that now resides at the bookshop. We are both proud alumni of the Colorado Antiquarian Book Seminar (CABS), and Megan additionally of Rare Book School at the University of Virginia and of the ABAA Women's Initiative Mentorship Program.
We have two open bookshops that carry new, used, bargain, rare, and antiquarian books, as well as our online office, impossible without our incredible team of booksellers, including two fellow CABS graduates, Miranda McMillan and Suzanne Carnes.
Like many booksellers with open brick-and-mortar stores, we are passionate generalists, but our specialties are in decorative publisher's cloth bindings; fairy tales, folklore, and mythology; popular science and natural history; the occult; and fine press books.
