MAISON PRUNIER and MÉHEUT, Mathurin [artist]. Nine Maison Prunier dîner menus dated 'Septembre 1938" each bifolium (360x250mm) stiff cream card, red and black lettered, [4]pp. Engraved and printed by E. Desfossés Néogravure, Paris. Near Fine.

MAISON PRUNIER and MÉHEUT, Mathurin [artist]

[MENUS] Maison Prunier [London] September 1938

nine dîner menus & one Après le Théâtre Menu

London: Maison Prunier, September 1938.

Nine Maison Prunier dîner menus dated 'Septembre 1938" each bifolium (360x250mm) stiff cream card, red and black lettered, [4]pp. Engraved and printed by E. Desfossés Néogravure, Paris.

All are near fine; and probably unused. Some faint edge-wear and soiling but otherwise remarkably crisp and bright.

The covers are illustrated in colour by Mathurin Méheut and (all fishing scenes in Brittany) are entitled:

Retour de Peche a les Sturgeon Les Callonges (Charente Inferieure)

Sardiniers demaillant La Sardine Baie de Douarnenez (Finistere)

Pecheurs de l'ile de Sieck relevante (?) casiers a homard (Finistere)

Concarneau arrivee d'un langoustier

Saint Guenole

Pecheurs de crevettes et de coquilles Mont St Michel (Manche)

Douarnenez filles d'usines attendant l'arrivale des barques

Ancienne pecheurs (?)

Yport (Seine inferieure) (?)

Page [2] provides 'a few explanations about some French names on the Menu'. Page [3] is the Dîner menu which includes an impressive raw bar of oysters French and English, scallops, shrimps, clams, salmon and caviar both sevruga and oscieta. Page [4] is the wine list, predominantly French, listing some excellent late 19th and early 20th century vintages and a stunning list of vintage Champagne.

The Après le Théâtre menu is undated but ca.1938 (as the prices are the same as on the menus); bifolium stiff cream decorated card (185x138mm) red and black lettered [4]pp. Engraved and printed by E Desfossés-Néogravure, Paris. The cover illustration, this time in black and white, is again by Mathurin Méheut entitled "Vanneuses morbihannaises"

Near Fine; not creased or folded, so unused; bottom corners lightly creased faint edge-wear and imperceptible soiling.

Mathurin Méheut (1882-1958) was a French painter, ceramist, engraver, and etcher based in Brittany best known for his depictions of Breton scenes, the sea, and nature. He also had a career as an interior designer and often experimented with both sketch and reproduction technique. During the 1930s he was highly sought after by publishers for book illustration. He also illustrated Madame Prunier's Fish Cookery Book also published in 1938.

Maison Prunier was in 1938 the place to dine for anyone who was anyone in London. Maison Prunier was originally established by the Prunier family in Paris in 1872. The London branch was opened in 1934 and was an instant success. A favourite of Edward VII and Wallis Simpson before their marriage and feted in the society pages almost daily. Renowned for its fish, and its wine cellars.

An uncommonly fine set of ephemeral menus from the premier restaurant in London, and one of the world's great fish restaurants between the wars.

§ OCLC records only 2 menus from 1940 held at the British Library; no holdings otherwise recorded.

Description:
ca. 1935. Very Good. Printed bill, 35 x 50 cm. Blue ink on paper. Restored and laid down. The propaganda war against Franco’s forces in Spain was fought largely with posters. These were pasted up on walls in the night at great risk not only to those putting them up, but to the printers, artists, and organizers, too. The Socorro Rojo Internacional (S.R.I.), a creation of the Communist International Congress of 1922, was intended to function as a support and aid organization (providing soup kitchens, medical care, etc.) but also propagandized energetically. This poster declares “War unto Death! To the provocateur, the spy, to anyone who sows discontent and fear. Let’s end the Fifth Column.” The little figure is composed of multiple eyes and antennae, keeping watch and listening. Such posters were willfully destroyed, and surviving examples are rare.

[Olympia, WA], 1935. Silver gelatin composite photograph (250 x 200 mm) with small tear-off monthly calendar for 1936. Inscribed "Merry Christmas, The Bowmans". A few minor nicks and spots at the edges. Excellent, unused condition. A remarkable piece of early aviation ephemera, this calendar was produced as a Christmas greeting by the early female aviator Marguerite (Martie) Bowman (1901-1985) and her husband Leslie, also a pilot. It depicts Bowman flying in her WACO INF biplane, registration number NC625Y, in formation with two others, and includes portraits of Bowman, her husband, and their daughter Larnie Bowman Allen. We have learned from one of the Bowmans' grandchildren that Larnie joined the family profession, becoming a wing-walker at eight and soloing at twelve. The Bowmans established an aviation business together and, during the 1920s, 30s and 40s, Martie Bowman ferried planes from factories and regularly participated in air races. Description:
Redlands, California: Pure Gold, [1955]. Stapled wraps. Very good. [12p.] Small chips to wrap edges. The Mutual Orange Distributors (MOD) was founded in Redlands, California, in 1906 as a cooperative marketing association representing citrus growers in California. Within a few years, the coop included citrus growers in western Arizona. In 1955, MOD changed its name to Pure Gold, originally the brand name for fruit grown by the approximately 2,500 MOD growers. Sunkist took over the Pure Gold trademark when the co-op closed in 1987 due to housing developments replacing the citrus fields and the shrinking number of packing plants. This booklet explains the history of the citrus-growing culture in California and Arizona and provides information on the variety of oranges, lemons, and grapefruit grown and their cultivation and packaging. A map on the back shows the regions represented by the Pure Gold cooperative. Scarce, none located in OCLC. B&w illustrations and halftone photographs. (11"x8-1/2")

Adams was born to Nathaniel Dickinson Adams and Harriet (Hastings) Adams in Shutesbury, Massachusetts. On his mother's side, he was a descendant of Thomas Hastings who came from the East Anglia region of England to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1634.[1] Adams received his early training in the Amherst, Massachusetts public schools and Phillips Exeter Academy. He graduated from Amherst College in 1872. In 1873 Adams traveled to Europe to study and write. In 1874 he then moved to Heidelberg, Germany to pursue the Ph.D. degree. There he was influenced by Johann Gustav Droysen and Johann Kaspar Bluntschli, the latter also becoming his mentor. Heidelberg did not then require a thesis from its doctoral candidates, instead it required an oral examination, for which he chose political science for his major field (Hauptfach), with two minors… Read More
