Garfield, James] WORKINGMEN! Can you afford to work as cheap as the Chinese? If so, vote for JAMES A. GARFIELD. Probably Lynn, Mass., January 1880. 28 cm x 22 cm. Printed on diaphanous paper. This rare surviving broadside for the presidential campaign of 1880 has undergone a surface cleaning to remove superficial and ground-in dirt. A previous repair with tape has been reversed. This broadside was washed to reduce acidity and some slight discoloration, and it was sized with gelatin to restore crispness and resilience to the paper. It has been lined with mulberry paper and wheat starch paste. Expertly conserved condition is very good. James A. Garfield (1831 – 1881) is the only sitting member of the House of Representatives to have been elected to the Presidency. His tenure as President was very short, as he was assassinated in July 1881 by a disgruntled constituent.

Very large broadside statistical overview of France in 1824
Paris, Belin-Leprieur, printed by Imprimerie de Jules Didot aîné, June 1824.
Plano (69x100 cm.). Letterpress text, engraved title and illustrated with an engraved ornamental border on thick paper without watermark.
€ 2.400
Impressively large and very rare French broadside table providing a detailed overview of the statistics on population, geography and economy of the 57 départemens of France for the year 1824. It does so in an extremely structured manner. Of each administrative region the precise geographic and topographic values are given, after which the specialization in natural or industrial productivity of these regions is described. For example, the département Calvados has "excellent horses, bestieux fat, grains, cider, cider brandy, flax, hemp" etc. etc. According to a contemporary review in Revue encyclopédique (1825), this table was considered especially useful to understand the importance of each of the départements, and… Read More

New York: Baker & Godwin, 1863. First Edition. Octavo. 117 pages, Index. Inscribed: "To David C. Acton, with the esteem and respect of his friend, David M. Barnes, July 1864." Acton had been made President of the Board of Police Commissioners in New York in 1860, a position he held until the outbreak of the Civil War. He was replaced by John G. Bergen and John Kennedy who became incapacitated in July 1863 as the mob protesting the draft began to cause mayhem (burning down the Colored Orphan Asylum, p. 117). Acton re-assumed command for the next five days and did not sleep as he quelled the riot. He himself was left with severe health problems for the next five years. Pastedown on verso of Dedicatory page, handwritten note: "Times of August 16, 1863" with newspaper column printing letter to Gen. Harvey Brown which in the later reply from Gen. Brown gives the credit for subduing the riot to Mr. Acton. This book has his name stamped in gilt on the front cover as "Hon. Thomas C. Acton"). One of the great… Read More

New York: John Low (later, E. Low), 1805. First American edition. Attractive early American encyclopedia, begun in 1805 by John Low and completed after his death by E. Low, with volumes dated 1805 through 1811. The title page states that the set was to have contained 170 plates, but it is unlikely that that number of plates was included in any extant copy (the Library of Congress has a set of the plates for this encylopedia that numbers 149, but does not have the text). This copy contains 122 plates, including 34 maps, ten of which are folding, with a folding plate. There is inconsistent pagination and two pages of volume VI which are not present and were probably never bound in. Full original polished calf with black spine labels and gilt volume numbers. Vol. I: 666p. + 27 plates incl. 6 maps (2 folding) and 2 celestial maps. Vol. II: 646p. + 21 plates incl. 5 maps (2 folding). Vol. III: 654p. + 29 plates incl. 4 maps (2 folding). Philadelphia: H. C. Carey and I. Lea. Very Good+. 1823. Hardcover. A two-volume first edition of an account of the Long Expedition to the Rocky Mountains by expedition botanist and geologist Edwin James. Compiled from the notes of Major Stephen H. Long, Mr. T. Say, and other gentlemen of the party by Mr. James. This rather scarce set presents the account of the experiences of the Stephen H. Long expedition of 1819-1820, in which Long was sent to find the source of the Platte River in the Rocky Mountains. Lacks the separate accompanying oversize atlas which was issued in 1822 per Howes J.41, who remarks [the expedition was notable in that it supplemented] ". . .earlier discoveries of Pike and of Lewis and Clark, and pronouncing the plains region as nothing but a desert, incapable of cultivation!". --- In maroon half leather and marbled paper-covered boards with gilt-stamped spine titling, four raised bands to spines and marbled endpapers. --- A very nice set, with bright, mostly… Read More
