About This Item

London: Macmillan & Co., 1932. Reprint. Half Leather. Near fine. John Tenniel. 8vo (19.5cm). Gilt top edges, pale blue linen over boards, dark blue morocco to spine and outer corners. Gilt rules to leather edges on covers, five raised bands to spine, with gilt titles and date to base. Matching pale blue marble card endpapers. The bindings almost certainly by Bayntun of Bath, having been in the same family home in Bath since their purchase, and match exactly the style of other Alice bindings by the firm from this period. However, there is no binder's ticket. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Untrimmed forward page edges. One Hundred and Eighty-Sixth Thousand. With Fourty-Two Illustrations by John Tenniel. Tissue guarded frontis. [4, poem and publisher's preface], 183, [2, pub's adverts]. Through the Looking Glass, 1933. One Hundred and Twenty-Seventh Thousand. With Fifty Illustrations by John Tenniel. Tissue guarded frontis. [3, poem, author's preface], 208. Both copies with previous owner's gift inscription to flyleaf, dated 1937. There is some sun fade to spines, and very faint, barely noticeable, short rubs to head and base of spine and raised bands of Through the Looking Glass. Both copies have a few very minor spots to rear prelims, but are otherwise square and tight and in excellent condition.

Synopsis

Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel, Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There , tell the story of a young girl in a fantasy world filled with peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. The classic tale of literary nonsense takes the reader on an exploration of logic and absurdities. The Alice books — sometimes combined or referred to with the abbreviated title Alice in Wonderland — have been translated into at least 97 languages with over a hundred different editions. The books have also been adapted numerous times into films (both live-action and cartoon), plays, and musicals.
