About This Item
London: For T. Becket and Co., 1771. First Edition. 8vo, in full contemporary calf, the boards framed in gilt and with gilt edges, the spine with ruled raised bands, and with the remnant of a gilt ruled and lettered morocco label. vii, 396, [11] pp. Internally very fine and fresh, clean and solid and tight, the binding sturdy and strong though worn and aged and with some cosmetic splitting to the outside joints. FIRST EDITION OF THIS CLASSIC EUROPEAN TRAVEL NARRATIVE, THE AUTHOR'S TOUR THROUGH ITALY AND FRANCE. Burney undertook the journey because, as he states in the introduction- "Not a single picture, statue, or building has been left undescribed, or an inscription uncopied, and yet neither the Conservatios or musical schools, the operas, or the oratorios, have scarce been mentioned: and though every library is crowded with histories of painting and other arts, as well as with the lives of their most illustrious professors; music and musicians have been utterly neglected.
