About This Item
London: The Bodley Head, 1975 4to (36 cm), title in color, foreword and 27 illustrations (26 letters and an ampersand) with comments on facing pages. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (dj slightly frayed at extremities). From the blurb: "Alphabet books, those fascinating compilations of facts, figures, and fancies, have a long and distinguishing history. This particular example is unashamedly directed at the typophile, for the letters of its alphabet are derived from the celebrated two-color initials of Gutenberg's Catholicon. On facing pages are concise biographies of the greatest printers from Aldus to Zainer. The book has been set by hand by John O. C. McCrillis, the author of the book and the senior designer and typographer of the Yale University Press."
