London: Calkin & Budd , 1848. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 8.5" by 5.5". None. The scarce first edition of this selection of religious and moral sentences from the works of Shakespeare in a decorative cloth binding. The scarce first edition. Bound in decorative cloth. Illustrated with a monochrome portrait frontispiece of Shakespeare, decorative borders and 2 monochrome plates. Collated complete. This work was produced by a member of the Shakespeare Society and provides a selection of moral and religious sentences from the works of Shakespeare. Shakespeare's sentences can be seen on the left page, with the corresponding passage from holy scriptures to the right, comparing the two and providing context to the religious phrases within the sentence. In the publisher's original cloth. Externally very smart with bumping to the extremities, fading to the spine, the odd minor mark, very small closed tears to the head and tail of the spine and slight discolouration to the extremities of the boards. Front hinge starting with light handling marks to the endpapers and an old ink inscription dated 1903 to the front free endpaper. Internally firmly bound with very lightly age toned pages to the extremities with an adhered newspaper clipping with a portrait of Shakespeare adhered to the front blank and age toning to the frontispiece and plates with offsetting to the verso of the frontispiece.
