About This Item

Bristol: J. W. Arrowsmith, Simpkin, Marshall & Co, 1889. First Edition, first state. Original Cloth. Very good +. A. Fredericks. A masterpiece of Victorian comic writing, gently poking fun at convention, with several renowned setpiece scenes. Original publisher's blue grey cloth with gilt titles to spine, black stamped title and silhouette of a boat to front cover. Small 8vo (19cm). [6], 2–315, [3]. First edition, first state with "Quay Street" as address to title page but without the street number of 11. Arrowsmith's 2/- series advert to front pastedown; two pages pub.'s adverts to rear, 'Arrowsmith's Bristol Library', listing 37 titles, with to facing page 'Books for Children' over two pages; to rear pastedown, two titles 'Ready in October', Prince Prigio and Jonathan and His Continent. The word "stream" present at the end of page 271. (Rodgers & Read). A Walsall bookseller's label, coincidentally Jerome's birthplace, to front pastedown. Neat previous owner's name to flyleaf in ink, dated Nov. 21, 1889. Slightly rubbed around spine ends, tips, minor marks to cloth of rear board. Small chip to preface page. A well looked after, bright copy, binding firm; very good or better and certainly hard to obtain in finer condition.

Synopsis

Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog), published in 1889, is a humorous account by Jerome K. Jerome of a boating holiday on the Thames between Kingston and Oxford. The book was initially intended to be a serious travel guide, with accounts of local history along the route, but the humorous elements took over to the point where the serious and somewhat sentimental passages seem a distraction to the comic novel.

Reviews

On Sep 4 2019, a reader said:
Laugh out loud hysterical! Every other line is hilarious! I made the mistake of reading this in public not realizing how funny it is! My advice is not to do that! You will not be able to stop the guffaws, snickers, chuckles from bursting forth. Mr. Jerome certainly knew how to write a witty and fantastic story. I'm happy that I found this masterpiece.
