About This Item

1791 Boston USA Medicine 1ed Benjamin Bell ULCERS Inflammation Gangrene Sores

Benjamin Bell was an 18th-century Scottish surgeon, often considered to be the most important surgeon from Scotland. He published 'System of Surgery' – an English handbook designed to teach surgery and various aspects of pain relief. Beyond 'System', Bell published a treatise on the treatment of ulcers which included his findings on swelling and inflammation.

According to Garrison-Morton,

"Bell improved the methods of amputation, introducing the 'triple incision of Bell… [System of Surgery] is his best work".

This 1791 first American edition of Bell's 'Ulcers' was published in Boston.
