DEATH CLAIMS A MAN OF GENIUS. FRONT PAGE OBITUARY OF AUTHOR GEORGE DU MAURIER ON OCTOBER 8, 1896. Newspaper. Volume 80, No. 131. October 9, 1896. First Edition. Condition: Very Good +. Appears gently read, some light foxing, creases, chips to extremities, complete, folds at quarter-fold typical of newspapers otherwise excellent. The San Francisco Call newspaper (named the Morning Call from 1856-1895) one time featured articles from Mark Twain and later stories from numerous writers with ties to early turn of the century San Francisco theatre. Scarce original article of the High Fives Gang October 7, 1896 stagecoach robbery enroute to White Oaks between Mountain Station Ranch and Wash Hale near the Oscura Mountains, New Mexico. The High Fives gang confessed to stagecoach driver John Whickwire it was they who attempted to rob the Atlantic & Pacific train earlier that month in Rio Puerco on October 2, 1896. Front page obituary of George Du Maurier who was author of the book "Trilby" remade into numerous films in the 20th Century and grandfather of the author Daphne du Maurier author of "Rebecca" later made into a film by Alfred Hitchcock. Additional news reports are the 1896 Water Wars of San Diego and discovery of the St. Elmo Mine in Mojave Desert by Deputy Sheriffs H.L. Borgwardt and D.M. Pyle of Kern County north of Los Angeles, California. Scarce newspaper of a historic event of a famous author. Broadsheet Size.
