Handcolored collagraphs and velvet flowers tell the wordless story. Banded with button and thread closure. Rebecca Goodale has been documenting the extinct and endangered flora and fauna of Maine since 1999. Her books in this area, as Nicholas Schroeder said in a review of her exhibition Lullaby, "vivify, celebrate, and elaborate them, often with poetic flourishes, rich metaphor, and abundance of color. Their surfaces mirror her subjects' habitats, and the rhythm of their bindings borrows from their intricate and animate patterns."  Once in a while she diverts from the specific theme of extinct and endangered to produce a playful book still with the theme of flora and fauna. Bird, String, Cricket is such a book. It is a playful book with bright colors and velvet flowers — a bird, a string, and a cricket.

The bindings have slight fading to spines, bumping and wear to corners and are slightly shaken (most noticeable in vols III-V), but all are sound. The contents are generally in very good clean condition. There is occasional spotting - most pronounced in Vol IV. Originally published in four parts issued in paper wraps; the first three parts were produced in 1884, and the last in 1885. Later binding with red burgundy cloth spine and corners, and green cloth over boards. Black ruled edges to green cloth. Lacking original paper wrap covers. Gold colored lettering on spine is a little faded, though remains clear. Volume shows just a little spine lean. Library stamp and withdrawal stamp in blank upper space of copyright page (verso of title page), and NO other library markings. Leather bound and housed in a chocolate Solander case. Artists include J. Fenwick Lansdowne (2), Peter Scott. John Ruthven (2), Albert Earl Gilbert, and others. Each plate faces a page with a photograph of the artist and a biographical sketch. Published by Ducks Unlimited Canada to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of North America's premier waterfowl conservation organization.
