Though the limitation states only 250 copies printed, it is believed that the actual number of copies printed far exceeds that amount, perhaps totaling 750-1,000. Signed by Henry Miller on the first blank page, though not as called for. Very Good with rubbing to gilt title block on front cover, spotting to cloth at edges. Shifreen & Jackson A25d.

Signed by author as Richard Hooker on the title page with quote marks around his name; Richard Hooker is the pseudonym of Dr. Hiester Richard Hornberger Jr. Near Fine, with light edge wear, toning to spine ends, small evidence of tape removal to recto of half-title page, hinge at title page over-opened. In a Near Fine unclipped dust jacket, with light shelf wear and toning. A laid-in note in a former owner's hand reads, "Dr. Hornberger autographed this book as "Richard Hooker" while still employed as a doctor at Thayer Hospital in Waterville, Maine." Signed copies are scarce.

Bound in publisher's original brown cloth with pine needle decoration across spine and front cover and title printed in black. 399 + 269 pp., plus publisher's catalog dated October, 1884. Near Fine with cloth lightly rubbed at extremities, lightly soiled and lightly spine darkened. A lovely copy.

London: Jarrold and Sons, 1877. First Edition. Good. First edition, first printing of the classic equine novel; in Carter's variant C binding. Good. Cloth well-worn and soiled, textblock edge lightly spotted, inner hinges repaired, pencil markings to brown coated endsheets, effaced owner name to first blank sheet and owner name in pencil to title page, light cigar smoke odor to pages, pages thumbed. Written by Sewell during the last years of her life, which she spent home-bound. She died five months after it's publication, living just long enough to see the book become a success. It went on to become one of the most well-known books of the Victorian era, as well as one of the best-selling books of all time. Additionally, the novel was notable for being used as a tool to advocate for more humane treatment of horses, drawing attention to a number of restrictive objects commonly in use at the time such as bearing reins and blinkers.

Bound in contemporary calf with morocco title label to spine lettered in gilt, spine ruled in gilt. Shallow wear to crown, front joint expertly repaired, faint stray graphite marks to top textblock edge; modern ownership rubber stamp to front free endpaper; ownership of "Jacob Chandler, Book, 4th month 11th, 1841, Price 1.25" on verso of preface page, and Chandler's name inked again on the verso of the "Testimony of Eight Witnesses" page. Contents toned and browned throughout. Chandler is likely a member of the Quaker family prominent in Chester County, Pennsylvania.
