Contemporary full leather bindings, rebacked preserving original spine, very good with a little general wear and rubbing, corners worn. Contents clean and tight, minimal foxing. A very good tight copy. Nissen 886.

London: Remington & Co Publishers, 1890. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo. pp. [vi], 270. Original grey cloth binding with black lettering and decoration to the front board, gilt lettering to the spine, a little general wear and some rubbing to extremities and joints, a couple of pin-prick holes to the front joint, cloth a little marked. Contents clean and tight, original patterned end papers to both front and back, somewhat browned also affecting the half-title page, paper to front hinge partially cracked but expertly repaired, contemporary pencil name and address to head of half-title page. A very good copy. A very scarce book - the first edition of the first novel of Anthony Hope (Hawkins) and paid for by Hope. He writes of it in his autobiography "I had already published one novel - on commission, at my own expense; it cost me fifty pounds, and the royalties amounted to thirteen" Few copies seem to have survived and Copac only list two British libraires with copies..

With 23 tipped-in colour plates with captioned tissue guards. Original Publisher's full vellum, with gilt decoration and lettering, very good with minimal wear, slight rubbing to edges, vellum has developed a slight patina, ribbon ties missing. Original decorated endpapers, top edge gilt, other edges uncut. Contents clean and tight, no inscriptions, paper slightly toned, all plates and tissue guards in very good condition without creases or folds; uncut edges a little dust soiled, paper crisp and appears unread. A very good copy of this superb limited edition..

Paris: F. Schoell, 1813. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. Elephant Folio. The publication history of this work is difficult to determine though it would appear to have been published between 1808-1813 and then discontinued. It also seemed to have later assumed the name 'Flora Parisiensis'. This copy includes the half-title page, title page [Flore Parisienne] followed by 32 pages of text and 44 leaves of fine uncoloured stipple-engraved plates. This copy includes the original information slip which states "Les neuf premiers Livraisons renfermeront Les Nos 1-5, 7-10, 13,15, 17-20, 22-26, 28-32, 34, 35, 37-41, 45-53, 59, 61, 68 des Planches. Rowlandson that appeared in Warne's "Baby Animal Book" (in Warne's 'Popular Picture Books Series'). The book and illustrations are not dated but Copac give 1925 as the publication date. The illustrations include the cover design (with attached but separate typography), White Persian Cat; Turkey and Geese; Cow and Calf; Shetland Ponies; Rabbits and Parrots. A copy of the original book is also included. The illustrations are in watercolour on thick card; all are signed G. D. Rowlandson or initialed G. D. R. A very good four volume set in contemporary, full tree calf binding with double lettering pieces in red and green. Complete pp. [iii]-vii, [1] 222; [2], 206; [2], 238 & [2], 198. No half-titles which may or may not be wanting, but the pagination for the prelims to vol. I might suggest that one is required? Very good bindings with a little rubbing, a couple of volumes slightly chipped to the head/tail of the spines, corners lightly bruised. Contents clean and tight, manuscript (Greek?) initials to title pages dated 1788 otherwise unmarked, no foxing, paper crisp. A very good set. A Rare Eighteenth Century Novel. We have managed to located just one other copy at auction in the last thirty years and that at Sotheby's sale of July 21, 1993, where it made £1,000 on the hammer, though seemingly not such a nice copy. A highly attractive and complete set, in excellent condition of the second edition, which includes an additional fourteen poets, (including Johnson himself), added to the original selection of 1779-81. Numerous engraved copper plates to accompany Johnson's "Lives", half-titles/contents summary page to all volumes. Bound in contemporary full polished calf with matching marbled end papers and all edges. Spine decorated and lettered in gilt, with six compartments, the second and fifth with contrasting red and sepia title labels respectively, the third with oval black volume number label, all other compartmens with various gilt motifs and decoration. Each specimen with printed name plate. Specimens are arranged one per sheet. Housed in a superb contemporary album of mahogony Morocco leather, extensive gilt to spine compartments, gilt decoration to the front and rear boards, decorative gilt turn-ins. Binding very good, hinges firm, professional and inconspicuous repairs to the head/tail of the spine. The album opens to reveal original satin effect Moire endpapers. The specimens are in a very good state of preservation, carefully pressed to paper. A very attractive Victorian collection of sea-weed specimens housed in a superb album. It is quite unusual to find an album in such a good condition..
