Library book plate on inside front cover. Title page displays a large woodcut device. Pages are clean overall with occasional spotting and age toning; faint inscription above title page device; outer margin of pp.735-6 reinforced with contemporary paper. Fore edge of the text block is a bit rubbed. The bottom edge is stamped with a library name. Board corner tips neatly repaired. Johann Van der Waeyen (1639-1701) was a Frisian Minister, scholar and controversialist. In 1677 he was forced to leave his position in Middelburg and move to Franeker. Several plates contain a whole palm illustrated. Bound in full period calf; re-backed preserving original gilt spine. Boards show rubbing and wear; board corners are neatly restored. Top edge of book block is a bit rubbed. Interior contains some marginal soiling and foxing; several areas of marginal worming and worm tracks are present in the upper and lower margins (interrupting the running title on a couple of pages). The upper portion of the book also contains some damp staining which is generally mild. A tear, part way across one plate, is professionally sealed and hardly noticeable. The binding is clean and tight with only the most miniscule signs of bumping to the upper corner tip of the front board. The dust jacket is price clipped on the inner flap and shows spots of wear and rubbing to the extremities. The head cap of the jacket spine is chipped (15 x 13 mm). The rear jacket displays some mild soiling and a couple of small tears (sealed). An ink stamp from the U.S. distributer Wehman Bros. ("Wehman Bros. Famed clairvoyant Nancy Fullwood’s first book, a series of spiritual teachings channeled from an entity known only as Sano Tarot, who first made himself known to her in 1917 while she was living a life of isolation in the Alabama countryside. Warmly inscribed and signed in 1930 to friend Anna Bing, wife of millionaire Leo S. Bing and a leading Los Angeles philanthropist and patron of the arts in her own right, who was a major influence in the creation of the Los Angeles County Art Museum. Inscription reads " To Anna-- It is written that a new Earth will rise out of the old chaotic sphere and the kingdom of harmony shall dwell therein." A beautiful and attractive 1864 printing of the famous "Ingoldsby Legends." This collection of myths, ghost stories, and poetry was written by R.H. Barham, who is better known by his penname, Thomas Ingoldsby. These legends were extremely popular from their inception in 1837, but this edition was illustrated with 60 George Cruikshank illustrations! While this collection is less popular today than it was in the 19th-century, it does include aspects that are still recognizable – the magic command "Abracadabra" and a version of the children's song Bingo!

Billingshurst: The Bookplate Society in association with The Keridwen Press, 1988. 1st edition. Paperback. Octavo (21 x 15 cm). 35 pages, 23 of which are b&w reproductions of the bookplates. (Also a b&w photograph of the artist as a frontispiece.) Part of a limited run of 500 copies, 140 of which were numbered and signed by the author. This is copy number 75: the number is inked on the reverse of the title page, the signature on the Introduction page that follows it. Very Good in Good jacket. Text a little shelf-soiled in its bottom corner, near the fore-edge. Jacket has faded around the spine, which is also a bit tanned at its foot.

New York: Mason Brothers, 1853. 192 pages. Illustrated with in-text wood engravings. Binding is embossed brown cloth, with gilt lettering on front cover. Hiram Mattison (1811-1868) was a prominent Methodist minister in New York, who, in addion to his opposition to fraudulent psychics, was an active proponent of temperance and abolition of slavery. In this book he debunks his era's fad of "spirit-rapping" and other practices by which mediums or spiritualists claim to communicate with the dead. As Mattison states in the preface, spirit-rapping "is the grand climax of soothsaying, astrology, witchcraft, phrenology, mesmerism, clairvoyance, Psychology, Fourierism, Millerism, Mormonism, and all other superstitions, delusions, and isms that have ever been, or probably ever will be."
