All uniformly bound in attractive fine early leather bindings of full red straight grained morocco. Spines with four raised bands, each with gilt ruling. Compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Gilt decorative borders on boards, with four blind stamped ruled lines inside the panel. Turn-ins with floral gilt roll. Board edges with gilt tooling to corners. All edges gilt. Neat previous owner bookplates on front paste downs. One gathering slightly sprung in volume one. Some light spotting to a few pages in each volume, but generally a clean set. Spine of volume three is a bit faded and worn and a bit of rubbing to the extremities of the other volumes but overall a very good and beautifully bound set.

Some foxing to several pages but overall a very good example in a fine early leather binding of full dark green morocco. Spine with five raised bands, each with blind ruled line. Compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Both boards have bevelled edges and are decorated and lettered with elaborate floral and ruled line designs and decorative lettering. Turn-ins with decorative and ruled gilt designs. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Some rubbing to the extremities but overall a very good and attractive copy of this delightful example of Victorian book production. The binding is unsigned but is certainly the work of a highly skilled binder.

Translated by M. Sachs and with a preface by Jean Cocteau. Illustrated with woodcuts by Henry Bischoff including 6 plates coloured by hand. The edition was limited to only 262 copies, of which 30 were hors commerce, 20 of these being printed on Auvergne a la cuve and numbered in Roman numerals from xii to xxxi. This is one such example. Full leather gilt with raised bands at the spine and decorated, colour-dyed covers, t.e.g and elaborate decorations to the pastedowns, untrimmed. Tom Lea did a portrait of Lon Tinkle, there is a tipped in reproduction of the portrait. At the bottom it is signed, "For Margaret McDermott, Tom Lea". That's an important distinction of this copy. Ms. McDermott was a very important patron of the arts for many years. Lon Tinkle was a respected author and educator in Dallas, Texas. This book commemorates an event of Feb 22, 1977, honoring his work.
