London: Clarendon Press 1766-1769. Four volumes in 1/2 butterscotch calf over marbled boards. Rebacked. Maroon morocco spine labels, gilt. Spine with raised bands. Random foxing particularly to preliminary leaves. A nice wide-margined set, with the majority of the text fine and fresh. The first volume is a SECOND EDITION, the remaining three volumes are FIRST EDITIONS. The foundations of English law rest extensively on this important work. (Printing And The Mind Of Man 212).. London: Henry S. King and Company, 1876. Eleven volumes in original box. Essentially no wear to the volumes. Elaborate gilt work on front cover and spine with blind-stamp on rear cover. Cloth is age spotted and spines very slightly darkened. Green endpapers with green silk book-marks. Box is cloth-covered, with some wear and fading of the pink cloth to tan. Front flap corners torn but intact. Original red silk pulls to extract the books from the box. The books have been well-protected by the box. Three volumes of "Poems", four volumes of "Idylls of the King", single volumes of "In Memorium", "Maud", "The Princess" and "Enoch Arden". . Later Edition.. White Cloth. The first 22 books are dated 1869, the final 2 are dated 1886. Spines are decorated with intricate gilt designs, black leather label. Top edges gilt. Front joint of Volume 1 is a bit weak, but remains attached. All other volumes are tight. Several volumes with very minor wear at spine extremities. Full-page illustrated plates and text illustrations by the author, Richard Doyle, and others. All-in-all, quite a lovely set, finely-bound by a well-respected bindery. Cited in CBEL lll, p.429. London: Printed By John Richardson, for George Nicol, 1894. Rebacked with original leather spine laid-down. The spine was chipped but most is retained. Black leather spine label. Covers and edges marbled. Hinges re-inforced probably at time of rebacking. Book-plate of Logan Clendening on front pastedown. Clendening was a distinguished teacher at the University of Kansas and a major collector of medical books. Old bookseller's description of the book dated 1950 affixed to the rear pastedown.This volume was bound without the frontispiece portrait which is supplied in facsimile. All eight engraved plates are found at the end of the book. Plates VII and VIII show some foxing at periphery, others are quite clean. A ninth plate is found at p.161. It contains two figures and is clean. Wide margins, only occasional minor foxing. 575pp. A well-preserved copy of this classic work.
