London, 1736. First Edition . Full Leather. Good/No Jacket. 4to. 76 pages, plus 53 copper engraved plates, most of which are hand colored. Original leather covers, with gilt decoration along edges are a little pitted, though generally good. Rebacked with leather covers over spine, which overlaps slightly with original decoration on boards. Gilt lettering on spine. End leaves are a little darkened and show various penciled/inked marks. Hinges with modern reinforcement. There is a little separation of two signatures of leaves, though paper remains tight. First four leaves are a little darkened and show a little offsetting; Volume is complete and otherwise in very good condition. Plates with life size representations of spiders are stunning.

All volumes have been professionally and very nicely rebacked, retaining original spine covers. Gilt on spine is good, though slightly faded on a few letters. Covers are lightly rubbed and show a little wear at corners in general, and along the lower edges of volume IV. Small book plate on top front paste down, and inked name on blank front free end page. Free end leaves show a few creases. Volumes remain tight and are otherwise clean and intact.

Exquisite period binding in half leather with raised spine bands, gilt stamped lettering and decoration, and red/green leather spine labels. Marbled paper over boards. Binding shows a couple of very slight scuffs, though remains nearly perfect. Library stamps on blank sides of plates, etc, as well as blank space on printers page and dedication page, though no other library markings. Some foxing on first and last leaves, though plates remain in very good condition.

Pebbled green cloth covers, with gilt stamped lettering and black stamped ruled decoration. Cloth covers are a little rubbed and show some light wear at corners and spine ends. Lettering remains bright, though covers show a few scuffs and light rubbing. Top hinge is cracked, and there is a little separation between title page and preface page. Volume remains tight, however. Scattered light foxing, mostly on first and last few leaves. The first and last plate are slightly darkened and show a little very light foxing. Other plates are very good.

Two volumes bound as one, and includes the original very scarce title page and dedication pages for volume II. Volume I was published in 1794 and volume II in 1799. 101 full page, hand colored, illustrations plates, with at least 18 being signed and dated by the artist. Original boards retained, and recased in full polished leather with raised spine bands, gilt stamped lettering and decoration, and hand tooled border over boards. Original hand tooled leather edge inside covers, and marbled end leaves. Bound by J. Bohn, No 31 Frith St., Soho, London. Blank end leaves are slightly soiled. Occasional light smudges and very slight foxing. Occasional very slight offsetting of coloring onto text. Collated and complete, with all plates being very good to near fine. Beautiful and bright. An exceptional example of this very scarce and desirable title.

Calton: T & A D Poyser, 1984. First Edition . Cloth - Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 304 pages, plus eight colour plates by the author. Volume is sold along with the eight original gouache paintings from which the plates were copied. Each painting is on a 10 x 14 inch sheet, though edges have been taped and a clear mylar(?) sheet loosely laid over with boarders showing useable space for copying. Each plate is signed by C. H. Fry and dated 1984. The painting identified to be plate number 2 shows moisture damage at lower left edge not affecting image. This damage was present prior being copied for the book, and the exact damage is seen in the bound plate number 2. Otherwise, paintings remain bright, beautiful, and in fine condition.

No date, though circa mid-late 18th century. 144 leaves (288 pages) on velum leaves, bound in leather. Sinew tied. Mostly black lettering, though with some in red. One full page illustration in color of Madonna and Child. There are a few decorative breaks between sections of text. Written in Ge'ez, an ancient South Semitic language originating in Eritrea and the northern region of Ethiopia. Once the official language of Aksum and Ethiopia, it now remains primarily used in the liturgy of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, and to a lesser degree by the Beta Israel Jewish Community (Wikipedi, 2017). Bottom cover is lacking, though all contents appear present. The first leaf is heavily rubbed and mostly illegible. Volume II contains 51 lessons with pagination [445] 446-650, 1-26, 677-1013 [1], [1913] 1914-2174 (Finis). Volume III contains 30 lessons with pagination [1015] 1016-1911. Some pagination may be mis-printed. Appears complete as bound into the three volumes at a later time. Binding is black cloth with burgundy leather spine labels likely salvaged from previous bindings. Scattered penciled notations. Scattered light and small worm holes not affecting text. There are several leaves in the second volume with closed tears, mostly with previous archival tape repairs.
