Fountain Well, High Street, Edinburgh: Oliver & Co, 1802. [The title continues "Likewise a new method of improving moss etc, together with valuable receipts for destroying vermin on bushes, hedges, trees etc."]. Small octavo, pp xxvii,(ii), 228, a folding chart at the rear a little stained), light age-toning and foxing, with 7 woodcut chapter heads and tail-pieces, the hinge at the title page cracking slightly but still perfectly sound, bound in later green cloth. RARE. [From the library of the nurseryman Will Ingwersen, with his bookplate on the front endpaper.]. {The folding chart lists the number of plants which can be grown in an acre, either Scots or English. The title page states that Hall was late gardener and nurseryman to the Hon. Family of Cromarty. The letters V.D.M.E.D. appear after his name. Apart from that bleak information, I can find nothing further on the author. The intriguing thing is that over half the book is devoted to catalogues of florists' flowers, which… Read More

1784 Astronomy Plurality of Worlds Fontenelle Isaac Newton Planet ZODIAC Science
"And seeing the Earth makes her circle in a year, I see the Sun likewise in the space of a year answer successively to the whole circle of the fixed stars, which circle is called…the zodiac."
– Fontenelle, Plurality of Worlds
A rare, new and enhanced edition of the "Conversations on the Plurality of Worlds" including "Dialogues of the Dead" by Bernard de Fontenelle. This work was originally in French, which was quite rare at the time considering most scientific works were written in Latin. The book is presented as hypothetical conversations between philosophers while gazing at stars. The books discusses the prospects of extraterrestrial life.
'Plurality of Worlds' is considered Fontenelle's most famous work, and is also one of the first major works of the Age of Enlightenment. The work offers explanations of various models of the universe, space, the heavens, and the zodiac, through a philosophical lens, and… Read More

Description:
1646 Pomponius Mela Situ Orbis Ancient Geography Solinus Aethicus Cosmographia
'De Situ Orbis' by Pomponius Mela was the only authority on ancient geography for more than 1000 years. Written in the middle of the 1st-century, this work describes all of the known world (as it was in the first-century AD) noting the locations of the British Islands, a survey of the Roman Empire, and even some of the earliest accounts of ancient Roman topography.
This 1646 Vogel edition was published in Leiden, published as an extension of the famed Elzevier publishing house. This edition notably contains the works of other popular ancient geographers including Solinus and Pliny, as well as "Aethici Cosmographia", an 8th-century account of the imaginary travels of Aethicus.

Description:
Cairo University Press [1954 - 1969]. Four volumes. The first three volumes are duplicates from East Malling Research Station librray, the only marking being a stamp on the half-title and shelf numbers on the spines, very clean internally, stoutly bound in a good red quarter leather and cloth binding. Volume Four is smartly bound in brown cloth. Overall quite an attractive set. The second volume has an inscriptin from the authors, and was originally given the othe botanist F.W. Andrews. A heavy set - extra postage will be needed. [The Flora, not unexpectedly, is an unusual work. It is a labour of love, clearly carried out unhurriedly in the tradition of those great botanical scholars Tackholm would emulate. It has been hailed as a model of scholarship and completeness. One special feature is the detailed treatment of the extensive ancient Egyptian tomb flora; another is the attention paid throughout the volumes to agriculturally important plants and economic botany. Also the enormous bibliographies,… Read More

The Hague: W. Junk, 1978. Two volumes, large octavo, pp xvi, 1439, a slight mark to one fore-edge, otherwise very clean internally, brown cloth in excellent condition, the dustwrappers are slightly rubbed and age-toned. SCARCE. [A heavy set - extra postage may be needed.]. {Southern Africa is certainly not a naturally bounded area so that there are several possibilities for delineating it and concepts about its extent. Wellington discussed the various possibilities for delineation and suggested that one line stands out more clearly and definitely as a physical boundary than any other, namely the South Equatorial Divide, the watershed between the ZaIre, Cuanza and Rufiji Rivers on the one hand and the Zambezi, Cunene and Rovuma Rivers on the other. This South Equatorial Divide is indeed a major line of separation for some organisms and is also applicable in a certain geographical sense, though it does not possess the slightest significance for many other groups of organisms, ecosystems or geographical… Read More

1898 1ed Clara Barton Red Cross Nursing Civil War Medicine Texas Illustrated

"You must never so much think as whether you like it or not, whether it is bearable or not; you must never think of anything except the need, and how to meet it."
– Clara Barton

Clara Barton spent much of her life helping people. She taught and helped care for soldiers on the battlefield during the Civil War, earning the name "Angel of the Battlefield." After going to Europe and learning about an organization there called the Red Cross, she decided to start one in America. As founder of the American Red Cross, which helps victims of natural disasters as well as war, Clara Barton sealed her place in history.

This 1898 first edition of "The Red Cross" catalogues the history of the American Red Cross and is thoroughly expanded from the 1883 edition. It contains new information not in previous iterations and examines relief work in the Civil War, Texas famines, Michigan forest fires, the Spanish-American War, and many… Read More

Description:
144 Pages. This is a very old (1846) book on Astronomy that has been copied many times since, though this one is probably the original copy. The book's exterior has much wear on it (see photos). There are worn areas on the front and rear covers, on all four corners, along all of its edges, at the top and bottom of the spine, and along both sides of the spine. The interior book has browned pages, stains, and foxing throughout it, though all of the printing and the numerous illustrations remain completely readable and the book's bindings remarkably enough remain tight and therefore presumably are sound. If you should order this classic old book on Astronomy from us, we will carefully wrap it up then box it, pad it, and mail it right away to you with both tracking and insurance and it will come with our genuine gratitude for your order.
