Illustrated with three folding engraved plates, commendation leaf, title page, pp (22), 333 (though actually 332), (14) + three page bookseller's advertisement, the largest plate has several splits at the folds but there is no loss, slight age-toning internally but otherwise clean and sound, contemporay calf blind-stamped, unlettered spine, some rubbing, wear, scuffs and marks but still very sound and with an attractive patina. [Blanche Henrey 1413 - mentioning the gap in pagination.]. {Switzer, c.1683 - 1745, was a nurseryman,seedsman and garden designer. A sound practical gardener and an early advocate of naturalistic gardening - "If the Beauties of Nature were not corrupted by Art, gardens would be much more valuable".}. First Edition. Full Leather. [From the library of the nurseryman Will Ingwersen, with his bookplate on the front endpaper.]. {The folding chart lists the number of plants which can be grown in an acre, either Scots or English. With an engraved portrait frontispiece, and with 258 engravings of plants drawn by Henderson and engraved by Thomas Bewick, thick octavo, pp xxviii, 902, [13], {lacking one leaf of the index and with several leaves neatly repaired}, a small adhesion spot to the frontispiece and the title page has led to slight loss of surface to both, generally clean and tight throughout, twentieth century full calf, lined to the margins, decorated spine, slight scuff damage to the uppoer cover otherwise just generally very slightly rubbed. [Before the new binding, the book had obviously been dropped on its upper corner and all pages are bruised and creased - see illustration. ]. Second edition. Full-Leather. Good. (ii], + plates volume (96 plates of 114), remarkably clean internally, contemporary half calf and cloth, the spines with raised bands and black morocco labels, slightly rubbed and scuffed, a little wear at the corners. The engravings are by by L. Fea,, S. Botta, H. Mil and A. Nizza after drawings by M. Lisa and J.C. Heyland; there is a presentation inscription, in Latin, in the first volume, from the author to Sir Charles James Fox Bunbury. [Lacking the final volume, which was not published until 1857. 1646 Pomponius Mela Situ Orbis Ancient Geography Solinus Aethicus Cosmographia
'De Situ Orbis' by Pomponius Mela was the only authority on ancient geography for more than 1000 years. Written in the middle of the 1st-century, this work describes all of the known world (as it was in the first-century AD) noting the locations of the British Islands, a survey of the Roman Empire, and even some of the earliest accounts of ancient Roman topography.
This 1646 Vogel edition was published in Leiden, published as an extension of the famed Elzevier publishing house. This edition notably contains the works of other popular ancient geographers including Solinus and Pliny, as well as "Aethici Cosmographia", an 8th-century account of the imaginary travels of Aethicus.

The first three volumes are duplicates from East Malling Research Station librray, the only marking being a stamp on the half-title and shelf numbers on the spines, very clean internally, stoutly bound in a good red quarter leather and cloth binding. Volume Four is smartly bound in brown cloth. Overall quite an attractive set. The second volume has an inscriptin from the authors, and was originally given the othe botanist F.W. Andrews. A heavy set - extra postage will be needed. [The Flora, not unexpectedly, is an unusual work. 144 Pages. This is a very old (1846) book on Astronomy that has been copied many times since, though this one is probably the original copy. The book's exterior has much wear on it (see photos). There are worn areas on the front and rear covers, on all four corners, along all of its edges, at the top and bottom of the spine, and along both sides of the spine. The interior book has browned pages, stains, and foxing throughout it, though all of the printing and the numerous illustrations remain completely readable and the book's bindings remarkably enough remain tight and therefore presumably are sound.
