New York: Dodd Mead & Company, 1943. First Edition 4to size red clothbound hardcover; 106 pages with full page black and white and color illustrations throughout The title page says: "Thomas Jefferson The Serene Citizen from Monticello who gave us an American Way of Thinking and who gained World-Wide Renown by his Nobel Understanding of that most Difficult of all the Arts THE ART OF LIVING as he felt that it should be practiced in the Republic of which he was one of the Founders." Hendrik Willem van Loon (1882 - 1944) was a historian, author and illustrator, often combining all three, as he did in this volume on Thomas Jefferson. He was the winner of first Newbery Medal in 1922 for his children's book, The Story of Mankind. This is a well loved child's book: light soil to covers, edgewear, lightly bumped corners, worn top corner. There is red ink transfer on bottom edge of inside covers and bottom edge of page from 92 to end of book, penciled name inside front cover with name and address penciled on blank reverse of fep. We note soil or fingermarks in the margin of at least six pages. Lightly sunned spine, small spot on front cover and larger area where it looks like there is an area covered with glue, tiny spot on pages 80/81, a stray ink mark on front cover. . First. Cloth. Good/No Jacket. Illus. by Van Loon, Hendrik Willem. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
