London : R Tyas, 1841 A fair copy in contemporary half leather binding with marbled boards and marbled page edges. With 38 pages of delicate hand coloured engravings. This work is scarce, particularly because the paper used is very prone to acid decay. The binding has compartments to spine and gilt titles. Internally, there is an armorial bookplate of Walter Somerville Gurney to the front pastedown. With half title, black and white decorative title page, and plain title page; 292 pages of text; and publisher's advertisements at the rear. The plates are tissue-guarded and have several bird images per plate - many grouped in an attempt to show how they would be in a natural setting. The binding is rubbed to all surfaces and there is wear to corners and spine joints. There is a small tear at the top of the spine. Internally the endpapers are marbled and the book block is splitting from the binding at the front endpaper - which could be easily repaired. The preliminaries and title pages are loose. There is an ink number written on a blank preliminary page. The text pages generally have light brown toning. The plates are very clean and bright. There is very occasional spotting.

LONDON : A[ndrew]. C[lark]. for John Martyn, 1678 A very good copy in a high quality full leather binding. With title page in red and black ink; preface; text in 3 books with 2 plates of bird traps bound in, and 2 tables which serve as early identification keys; an appendix; summary of falconry; index and 78 plates of birds (including the dodo) at the rear. This is the first English edition translated from the original Latin which was published in 1676, four years after Willughby's death by his friend and colleague John Ray. It marks one of the first attempts to take a rational, scientific approach to classifying birds. It is a matter of debate, and current research, as to whether Willughby or Ray played a greater part in its development. Ray supervised the publication. The illustrations were commissioned from a number of sources and some birds are depicted twice where the initial image was not very good. This copy lacks the original endpapers - perhaps lost during the later rebinding - but is… Read More

ABOUT THIS BOOK: From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Gulf, a sweeping cultural and natural history of the bald eagle in America. The bald eagle is regal but fearless, a bird you're not inclined to argue with. For centuries, Americans have celebrated it as "majestic" and "noble," yet savaged the living bird behind their national symbol as a malicious predator of livestock and, falsely, a snatcher of babies. Taking us from before the nation's founding through inconceivable resurgences of this enduring all-American species, Jack E. Davis contrasts the… Read More

From dust jacket: "The primary aim of this book is an interpretation of the main adaptations of birds for breeding-whether a species lests solitarily or in colonies, whether it is monogamous or has several mates, the lumber of eggs that it lays, the relative size of its eggs, the rate of development of its eggs and young, and the age at which it first breeds. This book is the first comprehensive survey of these points that has been made, so readers can see what is known, and what emains to be discovered, and hence may be stimulated to add to knowledge. Description:
Rising from sandbars on the Platte River with clarion calls, the sandhill crane (Grus canadensis) feels the urgency of spring migration. Elegant, noble, and spiritual, the sandhill crane is one of the most ancient of all birds. More than a half-million strong, flying in squadrons, these majestic creatures point northward to their Arctic and sub-Arctic breeding ranges. Theirs is an epic story of endurance through the ages. With 153 stunning color photographs, On Ancient Wings presents sandhill cranes in their wild but increasingly compromised habitats today. Over the course of five years, Michael Forsberg documented the tall gray birds in habitats ranging from the Alaskan tundra, to the arid High Plains, from Cuban nature preserves to suburban backyards. With an eye for beauty and an uncommon persistence, the author documents the cranes' challenges to adapt and survive in a rapidly changing natural world. Forsberg argues that humankind, for its own sake, should secure the cranes' place in the future.… Read More
