Cloth on 3 corners slightly worn, 4cm split on rear hinge causing the cloth on lower part of spine to separate from spine, an unsightly fault but easily restored. A good to very good copy. . pp. [ii]advert for tenth edition of Christmas Carol (verso blank), [viii] (including frontispiece and vignette title), 175. All edges gilt. Printed by Bradbury & Evans The Chimes was Dickens' second Christmas book after 'A Christmas Carol'. Dickens believed it would be more successful. He was mistaken, although he made a lot of money from 'The Chimes'. This is the second or later issue, with 'Chapman and Hall' below the vignette titlepage (Eckel 118, Walter E. Smith p. 34). St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
