Small archival repair to margin of TP (no involvement of print), ownership stamp (faint & hard to read) on pastedown and nice ownership inscription of an Avignon medical doctor dated 1676 on flyleaf. *Harvey's fundamental work on embryology and endocrinology which, if he had not discovered the circulation of the blood would alone have ensured his fame. All earlier theories of reproduction were based on Aristotelian and Galenic medicinal teaching but Harvey's researches on chicken and deer embryos proved to his satisfaction that semen fertilized the ovum and that spontaneous generation was without foundation. Quarto contemporary panelled calf (rebacked & blind-tooled with black spine label/tips worn) 336pp +(vi)index The Ae of Aquaticae & Noxae are very faintly printed on the Titlepage and there is slight paper thinning to the paper in 4 small (1cm diameter) round areas and part of 2 letters have been strengthened with ink. Wepfer was the first to analyze the pharmacological effect of hemlock and its poison. In this treatise 1679 the author also reports the discovery of the duodenal glands.

Giovanni Battista Morgagni was an Italian anatomist who was Professor of Anatomy at the University of Padua. He maintained his practice in pathology and through his clinical observation of precise detail and his methodical rigour, he has been termed the 'father of modern anatomical pathology'. His major work - Adversaria Anatomica - established his reputation in the field. This is a collection of his minor works including on the death of Cleopatra, and on gallstones. Tolosae [Toulouse]: Apud Arnaldum Colomerium, Regis, & Academiae Tolosanae Typographum, 1648 A very rare copy of a city pharmacopoeia in possibly contemporary loose vellum wrap. The Pharmaceutical profession was subject to strict regulations from its earliest origins. Reference or formula books were required, guarded, and handed down. In 17th and 18th century France, major cities published their own pharmacopoeia, with 'official' authority. This is the Toulouse pharmacopoiea authored by Pontio Francisco Purpan. Four large engraved plates by Filippo Bedetti, engraved by Carlo Della Rocca, to the rear of the book. Green softback covers with some marking to the cover. The paper on the spine has has considerable loss, but the binding is still holding well. Internally mainly clean, with a little marking, foxing and few small worm holes. Condition is Very Good: primary condition issue is dampstain that runs through entire text. Worst is seen on title page. A few old corner folds. Printed on superior 18th century laid paper which remains supple and bright. No interior writing, prior owner's name plate on front blank. 43 pages, modern blanks.
