Stedman's biographical essay on Poe first appeared in print in 1880 in Scribner's Monthly. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Poe and another engraved portrait of author Stedman, both with tissue guards captioned in red. Includes the original glassine dustjacket, which has a few small chips. The book has an acetate/plastic cover which protects both the book and glassine dj. Attractive book with original green cloth having spine and front cover lettered and ruled in bright gilt. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
