At this, the First National Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic; it is likely that General John M. Palmer, Major B. F. Stephenson surgeon of the Fourteenth Illinois regiment, and General S. A. Hurlbut were present and involved in the formation of the national rules. First edition..

The Battle of Port Royal was one of the earliest amphibious operations of the American Civil War, in which a United States Navy fleet and United States Army expeditionary force captured Port Royal Sound, South Carolina, between Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina, on November 7, 1861. The sound was guarded by two forts on opposite sides of the entrance, Fort Walker on Hilton Head Island to the south and Fort Beauregard on Phillip's Island to the north.

Albert Sidney Johnston was an American military general known for his roles in the Mexican American War and most notably the American Civil War. According to President Jefferson Davis, Johnston was the 'finest general officer in the Confederacy' before Robert E. Lee; Davis continued 'without doing injustice to the living, it may safely be said that our loss is irreparable." Interestingly, he was the highest-ranking officer to be killed in action during the entirety of the Civil War.

In 1878, a life of Johnston was published, outlining the major events in the general's life. According to Eicher, this work

The book and hard cover is in good condition. The interior of the book is almost new. Book has many personal and other illustrations. This book is priceless. It has first hand accounts from her sister Emilie (Helm), from her personal diaries, and from numerous documents and letters written to and from Mary Lincoln.

John Hunt Morgan was a Confederate general in the American Civil War known mostly by his now famous Raid, an operation now known as 'Morgan's Raid'. Morgan sought to slow the Union growth in both Vicksburg and Gettysburg (both of which would become war-changing battles) by moving Confederate troops throughout the North hoping to draw Union armies toward the raiders and away from strongholds.
Morgan was shot and killed during his raid; however, one of Morgan's officers, Basil Duke, wrote a memoir on the life of General Morgan following the War – a work which provides incredible first-hand details on the raid and its influence on the Civil War.
