Walter Channing (1786-1876), born to a distinguished New England family, was professor of midwifery and medical jurisprudence at Harvard, and became an early advocate of the introduction of anaesthesia in obstetrical procedures. He was chairman of the Franklin Lectures committee and had ties to many progressive causes. His son William Ellery Channing II was a great friend of Thoreau. American Imprints 44-1289
