Lugduni Batavorum: Officina Bonaventura & Abrahami Elzeviriorum, 1646 A very good copy of this rare work by Francois Viete in contemporary full vellum binding. Viete (1540-1603) was a lawyer by profession but had a passion for mathematics and is credited with making an important step in the development of algebra. He introduced the concept of letters as parameters in equations. This book contains his collected works, brought together by Frans von Schooten, a professor at Leiden University. With title page in red and black inks and fine engraving (other sections with additional use of red inks), sections with decorative head and tailpieces and initial capitals. Works arranged in 16 parts with extensive use of diagrams, formulae and tables. Section XIV, on the Gregorian Calendar, has a separate title page and 3 volvelles (discs to manipulate attached to the page) - XV has a separate title and both XIV and XV make extensive use of red inks. The vellum binding has conservation work (a separate statement of conservation works to this book can be provided on request) to provide some light cleaning and particularly to repair the bottom corner of the back board. There is a small title - Vieta - to the top of the spine. Internally there is an armorial bookplate to the front pastedown with the title Reg.Schol.Westmon. There is an ink word on a preliminary and very occasional pencil or ink annotation. There have been paper repairs to remove mould and build up the bottom corner of pages particularly to the rear of the book. This work has been expertly done to conservation standards. There is very occasional staining to a page or a slight mark but otherwise the text and volvelles are in beautifully clean condition. The book has a slight musty odour. Some ink hand written notes giving a biography of Viete and Van Schooten are enclosed - they look to be from around 1900. Please ask for more images and more detail on condition and conservation work if you are interested in the work.

London : Baldwin and Cradock, 1831 A collection of papers from the Library of Useful Knowledge bound in one volume. DeMorgan is best known for DeMorgan's Theorem (!A AND !B) == !(A OR B), which forms the basis of the modern technique used to miniaturise complex digital circuits, and thus delivers the extremely high density computing power of the today's microprocessor.

His work on probabilities is a land mark piece of mathematical theory that formed the basis of the actuarial calculations of life insurance policy risks. This is the rare first edition of this work, which appeared in the Library of Useful Knowledge. These were a series of learned papers prepared by the leading scientists and academics of the day, each being either 64 or 32 pages long – and sold at low cost to provide a source for knowledge “for the working man”. They were published by Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (SDUK).

Description:
London : John Wilcox and Thomas Heath, 1729 A very good copy of a scarce work on Mathematics by Samuel Cunn, revised by Edmund Stone, with black and white frontispiece and large folding plate. Cunn is best known for his translation of Euclid's work in to English, and in 1720 he published a 'corrected' edition of Newton's Arithmetica Universalis. Edmund Stone's history is not recorded, other than he was the son of the gardener for the Duke of Argyll's estates. Apparently the Duke discovered him reading Newton's Principia and so sponsored his academic career. His Treatise on Mathematical Instruments was published in 1723 and in 1725 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. His book 'A New Mathematical Dictionary' was published in 1726. It was in part derived from Latin versions of the works of the German philosopher Christian Wolff.
This copy has been recently rebound in half leather and buckram. There are gilt lined raised bands to spine and gilt titles. New… Read More

Description:
London : Awnsham Churchill, 1682 A good copy of the 1st edition in later full leather binding with frontispiece and 23 full page plates, of which 10 are folding. Leybourn's first work on Dialing was published in 1669; it's popularity (particularly given the use of sun-dials and astrolabes by the navy at that time) led to this expanded folio version, funded by subscription. William Leybourn was a leading practical mathematician and authored a number of works on surveying, Gunter's Line and measuring tables. This copy has been rebound fairly recently in a full pigskin binding with raised bands and title and author labels. New endpapers have been added, and the frontispiece relaid and repaired (there was loss to the side edge and a little damage to the portrait). Contents with title page; To the Reader 3pp; Contents of the Tractates [the work is arranged in 11 sections or Tractates] 4pp; errata 1p; Introduction 12pp; text with plates, tables and diagrams 330 pp; finis; final blank. Discounted for final fair hours!San Jose, CA: Billiken Press, 1971. First Edition. Paperback. Very good. Softcover 4to, 44pp. No date, but an article about the book appears in the Dec 3, 1971 San Jose State "Spartan Daily" newspaper. Adhesive remainder to the upper left cover, mild rubbing and edgewear. Previous owner's signature on the title page, else unmarked. Great '70s graphic design and illustrations. Developed while Goldberg was a grad student at SJS to make sturdy geometrical models that "combine techniques from the mathematics and art classroom." Patterns are included to make a equilateral tetrahedron, equilateral hexahedron, isosceles hexahedron, cube, octahedron, decahedron, icosahedron, twenty-four triangular hedron, and concave hedron. Goldberg published a more popular variation of the book in 1977, without Sellars (misspelled "Sellers" on the title page). The newer "Pholdit" featured simpler shapes and was marketed toward a more general audience for "family fun." Scarce.

Description:
This early American textbook has a quarter leather binding, with the spine in leather and heavy paper boards. The boards show considerable wear, with the marbled paper cover stripped away in places and heavily worn in others. However, both boards are firmly attached to the spine and the binding is still tight with all pages intact. The pages are heavy textured paper, some staining, but in amazingly good condition, considering the age of this obviously much-used volume. Except for some long-hand division on the inside of the back board, the book is unmarked. The best feature of the text is its content--besides all sorts of mathematic information, problems and measurements, it also has instructions/examples of all sorts of things mathematical--eg. the correct way to design a graph, calculations for different forms of weight, motion. measures of all kinds and an entire section of the appropriate forms of notes, deeds, bonds, receipts and wills--all in the erudite, charming language of the age.
