Venezia (Venice): Carlo Pecora, 1744. Two volumes (3 & 4 of 6) bound as one. Early full vellum binding with a brown leather title patch; all edges gilt. Parallel texts in Italian and French for seventy-two fables, each illustrated with a beautiful full-page color etching by Fossati. Each etching is printed in one of various shades of red, orange, brown, green, blue and black. In addition to the 72 plates, there are engraved vignettes on the 4 title pages, a red engraved headpiece for volume 3, and an engraved tailpiece following the text for each of the fables. Fossati (1706-1778) was an Italian architect who also was a very good printmaker and book illustrator. For the fables he portrayed animals realistically and used his architectural training for accurate renderings of baroque buildings. A rare title: OCLC locates only 8 libraries with any of the volumes and only 4 with volumes 3 and 4. It has been almost 30 years since a complete set was sold at auction, and ours is the only copy of volumes 3 and 4 to appear on the market in recent years. It is a very nice copy with text and plates on clean and supple laid paper; very faint offsetting from the plates on only a few fables. Extremely rare volume of poetry and essays by the early 19th century French author, poet and literary figure, Delphine de Girardin née Gay. This small (4.5 in. x 2.75 in.) volume is over 180 years old and is in excellent condition. Quarter bound in green leather and marbled paper. The spine is embossed with gilt scrollwork, title and author. The hinge is tight and the pages slightly yellowed with age, but still in fine, readable condition. Red Silk bookmark is still attached and faded only on the surface outside the book. No internal markings, bookplates or tears to pages. A remarkably preserved book for its age! Presumed first edition, printed by Boyveau in Paris; Siegle in London. Only 1 copy in OCLC, dated 1881. 12mo, 125pp. A book of useful phrases for conducting business and travel, geared toward the native French speaker, with the bulk of the text printed simultaneously in English on facing pages. Contains trade-specific scenarios and vocabulary. Quarter leather with marbled boards, in Near Fine condition with minor shelfwear and a hint of foxing throughout. Based on the style of binding and paper, we suspect the volume to have been custom-bound by its owner, Bousquet, whose signature appears on both the pastedown and the half-title page—else clean and unmarked. Rare volume in excellent condition.
