Description:
Victor Gollancz, London, 1959. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. First UK Edition (first printing). 8vo. 185pp. Pink pebbled cloth lettered in gold at the spine. A small smudge to the front free endpaper, and three tiny instances of very light miscellaneous soiling to the fore edge. Very good indeed in non-price-clipped dust wrapper, somewhat tanned at the spine panel with five tiny enclosed areas of loss, and a little rubbed at extremities with two tiny closed tears and several further slivers of loss. The author's second book and first novel - extremely elusive in this UK edition (which was issued the same year as the more common US edition)..

Ross, "Penny", was a popular artist and cartoonist in the early 1900s whose works include "The Flower Babies Book", "The Flower Children", "Butterfly Babies", "Bird Children", "Animal Children" and others. He was also the originator of the extremely popular comic strip "Mamma's Angel Child" for the Chicago Tribune and worked with Walt Disney before he made his own company.
Elizabeth Gordon was a fantasy author and poet. Her book 'Butterfly Babies' Book' is a short children's fantasy collection of poems that anthropomorphize butterflies giving them names and stories while giving information through poetry on the trees and flowers they eat and take shelter from. The book ends with an area for the reader to notate when they see butterflies and what butterflies they see.
This charming children's book of poems contains color illustrations from Ross on each page of each butterfly including on the cover boards!

1907 1st ed Dream of Fair Women Harrison Fisher Girl Illustrated Color PoetryHarrison Fisher, the "Historian of American Beauty," was an American illustrator whose works regularly appeared on the cover of 'Cosmopolitan' Magazine in the early 1900s.
"At the top of the heap stands Harrison Fisher, creator of the Fisher Girl and most popular of all Americans who ply brush and pencil for reproduction. By reason of his industry and because of the uniform soundness of his drawings and color sense, he is the acknowledged master of the pretty girl picture"(Cosmopolitan).
This first edition of the book 'A Dream of Fair Women' is filled with romantic full-color illustrations of the "Fisher Girl" type. The illustrations are inspired from the text of famous poems decorated in Art Nouveau style by E. Stetson Crawford. A fine piece!
