About This Item

New York / London: D. Appleton and Company, 1931. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good -. 7.5" x 5.25" x 0.75. Edward C,. Casewell (dust jackets and endpapers). Four volume complete set in slip case. Please note that the decades mentioned within this set are from the 1800s. Hardcover. Bound in olive green publisher's cloth with off-white labels with green illustration and lettering on the cover. Spine bears matching title label lettered in green. Endpapers are a two-page illustration by artist Edward C. Casewell in brown against a tan background. Text throughout is a larger-sized print. Illustrated dust jackets are in matching red, green and black colors on an off-white background. Volumes included in this set are:

1) Widows Only (The Sixties). 165 pp. "[This] is the first of four romances which deal with the old days in New Orleans, and which compose a second set in The Old City Fiction Series. [...] It is a story of tender love and unbending hate, laid against the background of the shattered order of plantation life immediately after the Civil War." (From the DJ).

2) Strife (The Seventies). 186 pp. "Deals with the atrocious conditions in New Orleans after the Civil War, when the carpet-baggers seized control of the state and its treasury. It is the graphic story of those conditions when they became so unbearable that the white Southerners arose in revolt and fought a pitched battle with Metropolitan Police, organized by the carpet-baggers, in the main thoroughfare of New Orleans." (From the DJ).

3) Closed Shutters (The Eighties). 104 pp. "[This] is the story of a Creole family, a widow and two daughters, whose inherited Spanish pride made them move from the Vieux Carre to the American quarter to conceal from their friends their dire poverty. [...] The tale of the relations between the American and the Creole families as brought about through this simple black woman is a charming bit of honest sentimentalism that gives the most intimate idea of life on the background of New Orleans - gives it truly, gives it graphically, in all its rich detail of little neighborly kindness." (From the DJ).

4) Mardi Gras Masks (The Nineties). 149 pp. "[This story] shows just how deeply embedded is the Mardi Gras Carnival in the hearts of New Orleanians. It is a story of the last day of Carnival in all its wild hilarity and irresponsible prankishness. [...] This story -- though it is now become a legend -- is based on an actual occurrence. [...] During the unfolding of this amusing tale [...] a complete picture is painted of a typical New Orleans Carnival, with all its gay pageantry and intricate, elaborate ceremonies, and a glimpse is given behind the scenes at the complicated machinery and careful organization that is its motive power." (From the DJ).

CONDITION: Books are overall VG with light exterior wear, moreso on the spine. Leaves have lightly and evenly toned with very little foxing, predominantly along the text block edges. Unmarked. Dust jackets are VG- with chipping and soiling along spines. Widows Only dj shows an open tear along the head, and Closed Shutters dust jacket shows both open and closed tears on the spine. Slipcase is strong, yet shows wear on all sides. A very nice, very readable set. Full refund if not satisfied.
