New York: D. Van Nostrand Company, Inc., 1931. Good+ EX-LIBRARY. A solid copy (see photos). FIRST PRINTING of the book that laid the foundation for modern quality control. Bound in the original blue cloth, moderately rubbed at the corners and spine ends. WITHDRAWN stamp, and a few other library markings. There is a small stain on the fore-edge of the text block (see 5th photo). The stain is very light and extends only 5 mm into the blank outer margin. NO text is affected. Gilt lettering on the spine is still bright and shiny. Inner hinges are perfect. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. The American physicist, engineer and statistician Walter Andrew Shewhart (1891-1967) is credited as the father of statistical quality control. His writings were a major influence on the work of W. Edwards Deming, Raymond T. Birge, and many others. Shewhart was founding member, fellow and president of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics; founding member and first Shewhart Medalist of the American Society for Quality; fellow and president of the American Statistical Association; and American Society of Mechanical Engineers Holley medalist. The following is from a tribute to Shewhart from the American Society for Quality (ASQ): "The industrial age was easing into its second century when a young engineer named Walter A. Shewhart came along and altered the course of industrial history... His monumental work, ECONOMIC CONTROL OF QUALITY OF MANUFACTURED PRODUCT, published in 1931, is regarded as a complete and thorough exposition of the basic principles of quality control." From the Engineering Statistics Handbook: "The first to apply the newly discovered statistical methods to the problem of quality control was Walter A. Shewhart of the Bell Telephone Laboratories. He issued a memorandum on May 16, 1924 that featured a sketch of a modern control chart. Shewhart kept improving and working on this scheme, and in 1931 he published a book on statistical quality control, ECONOMIC CONTROL OF QUALITY OF MANUFACTURED PRODUCT, published by Van Nostrand in New York. This book set the tone for subsequent applications of statistical methods to process control.". First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. Good+ EX-LIBRARY/No jacket. 8vo. xv, 501pp.
