Lancaster: American Physical Society, 1957. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS of the existence of the KL Meson. The long-lived neutral kaon is called the KL ("K-long") and decays primarily into three pions. In particle physics, a kaon also called a K meson and denoted K is any one of a group of four mesons distinguished by the fact that they carry a quantum number called strangeness. In the quark model they are understood to contain a strange quark (or antiquark), paired with an up or down antiquark (or quark). FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF TWO VERY FAMOUS PAPERS BY JOHN BELL ON HIDDEN VARIABLES IN QUANTUM THEORY AND A FIRST EDITION OF THE PAPER IN WHICH BELL FINALLY PROVES THAT HIDDEN VARIABLES CAN IN FACT DESCRIBE QUANTUM EVENTS IF NON-LOCALITY IS INCLUDED. John Bell, originator of Bells Theorem, was one of the most important theorems in quantum physics. Bells Theorem draws a line in the sand between the world we know intuitively and that of quantum mechanics. Elegant and brief yet also called "the most profound in science," the theorem states simply that "no physical theory of local hidden variables can ever reproduce all of the predictions of quantum mechanics" (Stapp, 1975). In 1932, John von Neumann wrote a paper disproving de Broglies argument that there is a hidden variable that determines the precise position of the photon. Von Neumann was such a brilliant mathematician that no one bothered to check his math; when Bell verified his calculations in this paper, he showed that von Neumann had been wrong -- that if particles could communicate faster than light (called ('non-locality'), hidden variables could in fact exist. In Reviews of Modern Physics, 38, 1966, pp. 447-452. Lancaster: American Physical Society. 4to. (10.5 x 8 inches; 263 x 200mm). Full volume handsomely bound in three quarter red cloth over marbled paper boards; maroon morocco spine labels. The binding is pristine save for slight scuffing to the spine labels. The interior is in near fine condition.

Berlin: Julius Springer. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST MATHEMATICALLY CORRECT FORMULATION OF THE HEISENBERG UNCERTAINTY PRINCIPLE. In quantum mechanics, "the uncertainty principle is any of a variety of mathematical inequalities asserting a fundamental limit to the precision with which certain pairs of physical properties of a particle, such as position x and momentum p, can be known simultaneously. The more precisely the position of some particle is determined, the less precisely its momentum can be known and vice versa. In "Zur quantenmechanik einfacher bewegungstypen," or "Quantum mechanics of simple types of motion, Earle Kennard correctly derived the formula for uncertainty of position and momentum only a few months after Heisenberg stated his principle. While on a sabbatical from Cornell and at the University of Gottingen in 1926, Kennard had learned the new quantum mechanics directly from Heisenberg and Jordan. With that knowledge and his deep understanding of Heisenberg's work,…

Both 1905 treatises are "beyond compare and without precedent, one of the greatest scientific achievements in content and one of the most brilliant in style" (Gosling, Albert Einstein). The first paper is "a landmark in the development of physics, one of the two papers that laid out the theory of special relativity, formulated a new conception of time. By assuming that the speed of light is the same to every observer moving at a constant velocity, Einstein showed that space and time were not independent: spacetime was born.

Description:
Lynn, MA. 1915: Thos. P. Nichols & Son Co. First Edition. Quarto. In two Volumes. Lowell was an American astronomer who predicted the existence of a planet beyond the orbit of Neptune. He published a series of "Memoirs of the Lowell Observatory" containing theoretical researches of his personal studies of a "Trans-Neptuneian Planet" and of the structure of "Saturn's Rings". In volume one he attributed certain irregularities to the action of an unseen planet beyond Neptune and calculated its probable position. In 1905 he organized a systematic search for the planet by the staff of his observatory, and in 1915 he published his Memoir on a Trans-Neptunian Planet. Fourteen years after his death the search culminated in the discovery of Pluto. Volume two contains his observations and calculations of Saturn's rotation and the density of its rings. Volume 1, No. 1: 105pp. with nine plates (two double-page) situated at the rear, bound in original printed wraps with stripes (off-setting from cardboard box but…
