London: Printed for Jacob Tonson at the Sign of the Judges Head in Chancery Lane, near Fleet Street, 1680. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing in elegantly stamped boards with the buttressed spine also being decoratively stamped (spine restored and relaid with some loss to the original spine, front hinge neatly repaired, occasional marginal brackets added by a prior reader) [22], 1- 128, 139-234, 233-280 + Frontis --- the page numbers reflect errors, and the text is complete; a collection of Ovid's Epistles with a Preface by John Dryden, along with translations by Dryden, Sir Carr Scrope (a companion of King Charles II), Nahum Tate (who became England's Poet Laureate), Poet Thomas Flatman, Thomas Rymer (Historiographer Royal), Dramatist Thomas Otway, Poet and Satirist Samuel Butler, Poet and Playwright Elkanah Settle, Dramatist Aphra Behn, and others. [One of England's first professional literary writers, Dramatist Aphra Behn contributed a verse paraphrase of Ovid's "Oenone to Paris", and, as Behn was not expert in Latin, John Cooper's translation of the work was added to later editions of the book. Notably, however, in his Preface, Dryden stated "The reader will here find most of the translations, with some little latitude or variation form the authour's sence: that of Oenone to Paris, is in Mr. Cowley's way of imitation only. I was desir'd to say that the authour who is of the fair sex, understood not Latine. But if she does not, I am afraid she has given us occasion to be asham'd who do."] A notable and quite popular work, this miscellaney was thrice reprinted during the 17th Century and numerous times thereafter; copies of the work in the first edition, as is presented here, are quite scarce to the market. SCARCE.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1922. Signed and Numbered First. Hardcover. Very Good with no dust jacket/No Dustjacket. From the signed, limited, numbered first printing, this is number 266, signed by the author at the limitation page opposite the full title. The pages are bright saving some toning around the deckled edges and quite clean except for a very few scattered spots of foxing; no owners' marks; the quarter cloth binding leans gently to the right but remains tight; the paper boards and paper title plate at the spine show some chipping around the edges, with a pressure mark at the bottom right front corner, a small inward turn and surface scuff at the top left rear corner, and some surface creasing at the corners and right edge of the title plate; some fading is also evident along the head edges of the paper and along the right rear, and the title plate is age-toned; nonetheless, a remarkably clean and attractive book, well-preserved. 459pp.; an extra copy of the title plate is tipped in at the… Read More

Cleveland, 1966. Faint toning. 11 x 8.5 inches. Title leaf of translucent paper with an original drawing by levy. Mimeographed. 12 pages, on rectos only. Stapled wrappers, front cover with original ink scarab drawing by the author mounted. One of 33 copies. A scarce publication by one of levy's unnamed presses, being Edouard Naville's translation of 'The Litany of Ra.' The large original drawing of a scarab on the cover is reflective of levy's interest in the symbol, which he used as the title of his collection 'Scarab Poems.' Though neither his name, nor that of one of his presses, appears in the text, this has all the hallmarks of levy's important mimeographed books, and appears less frequently on the market than others. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness.
