London: Moon Books. Fine/Fine. 2000. First Thus, First Printing. Full-Leather. 7" x 5.5" Calf-bound limited edition of 2000 printed on hand-made paper and illustrated by original drawings by Donata Almici. Superbly produced. The poem was originally penned by Galileo in 1509 in Pisa, where, as a young lecturer he railed against a system in which he was obliged to wear his academic gown at all times. He takes argues (toungue-in cheek) that we should do as beasts do and go naked, and examines the consequences of doing this. The poem has been translated into English iambic tercets by Giovanni Bignami and the original Italian text is presented on facing pages. The book ends with another Galilean poem "Enigma" "Galileo's unsolved riddle" . This book is in fine condition with the original glassine wrapper and corrugated box that doubles as a slipcase. A scarce publication that seldom comes to market. .

1553 Sabinus Catalog of Roman & German Emperors ROME Charlemagne Augustus Caesar

Georg Sabinus was a 16th-century German poet and historian who published an important catalogue of the emperors of Rome. Curiously, Sabinus supplemented the lists of Roman rulers with lists of German leaders. Each entry features a short description of the figure including some of which are written in poetic verse. It includes all the known Roman and German rulers such as Charlemagne, Otto the Great, Charles V, Constantine, Julius Caesar, Nero, and Augustus Caesar.
This fascinating Latin edition was published in Wittemberg, Germany in 1553 by Kreutzer

Description:
1537 1ed Orthodox Saint John Chrysostom On the Priesthood + Brixius Marburg

A rare 16th-century printing of works of John Chrysostom. Chrysostom was one of the most important Early Christian Church authors and preachers and is most remembered for his sermons and homilies. He preached on many different subjects, but his most frequented topic was helping the needy. Chrysostom calls for followers of Jesus to set aside their material desires to help the poor, often in a way that shamed the rich and guilted them in to giving.
"Do you pay such honor to your excrements as to receive them into a silver chamber-pot when another man made in the image of God is perishing in the cold?" (Chrysostom in Liebeschuetz)

One of his most important treatises was 'On the Priesthood' in which he describes his experiences becoming a priest and living as a priest. Interestingly, this work was popular during his lifetime as he made references to it in his other works.

Title continues: "and interspersed with extracts in the same stanza as the original, by William Stewart Rose." Berni recast Boiardo's poem. "Berni undertook the revision of the whole poem, avowedly altering no sentiment, removing or adding no incident, but simply giving to each line and stanza due gracefulness and polish. His task he completed with marvellous success; scarcely a line remains as it was, and the general opinion has pronounced decisively in favour of the revision over the original. Uppsala: Almqvist & Wiksells, 1949. Large octavo, pp 338, a very occasional light and discrete pencil note in a margin, otherwise incredibly clean internally, paperback, the covers in very good condition. RARE - a fine copy. [Macer Floridus is the alleged pseudonym of Odo de Meung, a French cleric and physician who lived during the 11th century and was the presumed author of the herbal poem De Viribus Herbarum (On the properties of plants). The use of "Macer" alludes to the Roman poet, Aemilius Macer (16 B.C.), who authored a poem on remedies for those afflicted with wounds from poisonous serpents. The herbal, commonly referred to as the Macer Floridus, was written in Latin hexameter verse and presented the medicinal uses of plants. The rhyming verse aided doctors and apothecaries in memorizing medicinal recipes and treatments, which made the herbal popular among those who practiced medicine during the Middle Ages. The Macer Floridus is recognized as a signal of revival in botanical… Read More
